Trystar's team members are our most important asset, and we are in search of a Staff Electrical Engineer - Power System Controls to join our engineering team in Burnsville, MN; Faribault, MN; Murfreesboro, TN; Waukesha, WI; or Pointe-Claire, Canada. As a Staff Electrical Engineer, you will see solutions from the engineering prototype phase to series production. You will be responsible lead the design, implementation, and optimization of advanced control system technology offerings for electric power networks within the Research, Development, & Engineering team. In this role, you will work on critical infrastructure projects, collaborate across interdisciplinary teams, and ensure the reliable, secure, and efficient operation of generation, transmission, and distribution systems.

In this role you will get to:

Control System Design & Development
  • Design and develop advanced control algorithms for power system applications including voltage regulation, frequency control, and load balancing.
  • Implement and validate real-time control systems using SCADA, EMS, DMS, and other automation tools.
  • Design and commission generator control systems, including excitation control, governor settings, and automatic voltage regulation (AVR).
  • Develop and validate generator paralleling logic, synchronization controls, and load sharing schemes for multiple gensets and grid interconnections.

System Integration & Optimization
  • Lead studies and modeling of power system dynamic behavior under various operating conditions and disturbances.
  • Support the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs), renewable generation, and storage systems with grid control strategies.
  • Integrate controllers with electrical and mechanical systems to ensure seamless operation.
  • Identify and implement performance improvements to optimize efficiency, reliability, and regulatory compliance.

Testing, Validation, & Troubleshooting
  • Perform stability and contingency analyses, including N-1/N-2 scenarios and remedial action schemes (RAS).
  • Conduct functional testing, bench testing, prototype validation, and on-site commissioning to validate control system performance.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot control system issues, ensuring compliance with safety, reliability, and industry standards.

Documentation & Compliance
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including control diagrams, wiring schematics, software code, and test reports.
  • Ensure all designs adhere to relevant industry standards and safety regulations (IEEE, NERC, FERC, IEC, UL).

Collaboration & Communication
  • Work closely with project managers, engineers, and field technicians to ensure designs meet project requirements and customer expectations.
  • Provide technical support during installation and commissioning phases.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership on large-scale projects.

Continuous Improvement & Innovation
  • Stay up to date with emerging industry trends, technologies, and best practices to drive innovation in power system control design.
  • Implement cybersecurity best practices in control system development.
  • Develop and maintain control and test software to support production.
  • Lead root-cause investigations.
  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to design engineers, test technicians, fabrication and assembly personnel.
