JOB DESCRIPTION

Wood is currently sourcing for a suitably qualified Subcontract Lead with extensive experience within EPC environment to join our PNG In-Country team at LNGP, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea on a walk-in walk out schedule (5 days on/ weekend off, 8 hours/day).

Reporting to the In-Country Manager with a dotted line to the Commercial Manager in Australia, the In-Country Subcontracts Lead is responsible for managing and overseeing the subcontract activities across Wood Group's projects within Papua New Guinea. This critical role ensures that subcontractor engagement, contract administration and performance management are aligned with project objectives, company policies & procedures, and local legislative requirements.

The role requires strong commercial acumen, leadership capability and the ability to proactively manage risks, drive efficiencies and deliver best-value outcomes to support project success.

This role also provides leadership support to the in-country procurement team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Subcontract Strategy & Execution
  • Develop, implement and manage subcontracting strategies aligned with project and client objectives.
  • Prepare and issue Invitation to Tender (ITT) packages, manage clarifications, evaluate bids and lead award recommendations.
  • Establish reliable subcontractor networks and negotiate favourable terms that balance risk and commercial interests.

2. Subcontract Negotiations & Management
  • Lead contract negotiations and ensure subcontracts are structured to minimize risk and optimize value.
  • Administer subcontract agreements throughout the project lifecycle, including variations, claims, change orders, and final closeouts.
  • Conduct contract kick-off meetings and coordinate subcontractor onboarding processes to ensure alignment with project expectations.

3. Compliance, Risk & Governance
  • Ensure all subcontracting activities comply with company policies, client requirements and local legal frameworks.
  • Proactively identify contractual risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Maintain subcontractor documentation to audit-ready standards, ensuring transparency and accountability.

4. Stakeholder Engagement & Relationship Management
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, internal project teams and client representatives.
  • Lead subcontractor performance management activities; including regular reviews, feedback sessions and issues resolution.
  • Act as focal point for subcontractor communications and internal & client interface management.
  • Required at times to visit site (HGCP) on rotation (12hrs) to check/monitor work progress of subordinates.
  • Will be directly involved with training and performance reviews of subordinates.

5. Reporting, Analytics & Continuous Improvement
  • Prepare regular reports on subcontractor performance, contract status, commercial risks and cost saving initiatives.
  • Support post-award reviews to capture lessons learned and drive ongoing improvements in subcontract management practices.
  • Maintain dashboards and KPI tracking tools to monitor subcontractor and procurement effectiveness.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in either Business, Supply Chain Management, Commerce, Law, Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years' experience in contacts or subcontract administration/management within oil & gas, mining or major infrastructure sectors.
  • Extensive experience managing subcontractor relationships in complex, fast-paced project environments.

Skills
  • Subcontract Management - Managing subcontractor engagements, contact lifecycle and commercial framework.
  • Contract Negotiation - Strong negotiation skills & understanding of contract models. Firm appreciation of and ability to negotiate T&Cs, especially Distribution of Risk clauses; ability to manage complex contracts and drive value outcomes.
  • Construction & Project Execution Knowledge - Understanding of project site activities; construction scopes and contractor interface requirements.
  • Risk Management - Ability to identify, analyze and mitigate contractual and operational risks.
  • Stakeholder Engagement - Excellent interpersonal skills; managing relationships with subcontractors, internal clients and external partners.
  • ERP Systems Proficiency - Adept with ERP systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Leadership& Team Coordination - Coordinating teams across multi-disciplinary project functions.
  • Strategic Thinking and Problem-Solving - Ability to align subcontract strategies with broader project and business goals.
