Position Overview:

The Senior Hardware Engineer is part of the PD&E design team, that works on the conceptualization, design, development, validation and improvement of various power conversion and energy storage products.

The Senior Hardware Engineer researches, develops and validates PCBA prototypes using ECAD tools and lab equipment, ensuring design performance through rigorous testing and thoughtful component selection. Acting as the Electrical Architect, they oversee all electronic aspects of the product, balancing technical complexity, performance, cost, and development timelines, while maintaining close alignment with mechanical design. They lead the technical aspects of product certification processes, including EMI and safety compliance. Their responsibilities also include evaluating and approving electrical components based on detailed analysis, supporting ongoing product maintenance. Additionally, they provide input on supplier selection, purchasing decisions, and sourcing strategies. The role includes mentoring team members and sharing technical expertise to strengthen the department. The Senior Hardware Engineer actively drives continuous product and process improvements and assesses the feasibility of integrating new technologies into existing designs. This role demands a combination of deep technical acumen, leadership, collaboration, and a strong focus on innovation and quality.

Essential Functions:
  • Responsible for the research and development of ruggedized products, to be used in Marine and/or Mobile-RV environments; makes the translation from functional requirements into a diagrams, which are translated into physical design with electronic components. Peer reviews the electrical designs from other projects.
  • Translates the electrical design (e.g. proposal, sketch or simulation) into PCBA prototypes by means of ECAD design tools. Validates the prototypes and chooses the components that are part of a complete product. Validation is done by black box testing and more in-depth testing (e.g. simulation, lab equipment, program of demands).
  • Acts as an Electrical architect. Keeps a high-level overview of all electrical aspects, bearing in mind technical complexity and product's overall performance, time constraints and costs while working closely with the project team to align mechanical and electrical design aspects. Has a mentor role within the department.
  • Takes the technical lead in the electronic certification (i.e. EMI, Safety) of products.
  • Designs, tests and approves electrical components of the products as part of product maintenance. Approval is based on samples, data sheets, specifications and evaluation report.
  • Provides input for purchasing, component picking, choosing suppliers and manufacturers.
  • Responsible for continuous improvement of the products and techniques. Researches whether new techniques are also (cost) efficient for older products.

Diversity of thought and experiences is fundamental when imagining the unimaginable. Certain skillsets/experiences are necessary; however, others can be developed along the way.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in an Electrical/Electronic field of study.
  • At least 7 years of experience in product development in an engineering environment.
  • Experience in detailed electronic design, validation and production of electronic products.
  • Knowledge of power conversion topologies, ranging from 100mW to 3+kW.
  • Natural proficiency with test and measurement equipment.
  • Capability to mentor younger colleagues.
  • Experience with ECAD tools for schematic capture and PCB design.
  • Experience with simulation tools for electronics design (such as Spice, PLECS, MatLab).
  • Knowledge of product compliance standards (CE, UL, E-Mark, etc.).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work with a global team/audience.
  • Ability to prioritize work, design choices, tradeoffs in order to meet project's timeline and milestones. Professionally maintain composure and effectiveness under pressure and changing conditions.
  • High level of self-reliance and problem-solving mindset.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Bachelor's degree in an Electrical/Electronic field of study.
  • 10 years of experience developing power electronics, power conversion and energy storage products.
  • Familiarity with battery management systems and their design.
  • Experience with Cadence's OrCAD design suite for schematic capture and PCB design.
  • Practical experience of developing products to meet market compliance standards, knowledge of European market directives (LVD, RED, EMC, etc.).
  • Capability of reading programing languages (such as C, Python) and ability to automate test and measurement equipment.
  • Experience with Siemens' TeamCenter PLM tool

Working Conditions:
  • While this role includes typical office work - such as documentation, design reviews, and development on your laptop - it also requires hands-on work in our electronics labs. The labs are equipped with test and measurement equipment like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, and soldering stations. This is where our prototypes are assembled and our products debugged, validated and improved. The role is a blend of engineering theory and practical application in a lab environment.
  • Flexible work schedule however, 3 days in the office is required
  • Occasional travel to customers, suppliers and discipline related conferences and seminars.
