Functions:
  • The Naval Architect and Marine Engineer III will work closely with team members and will require no guidance to perform the job functions other than tasking from the direct supervisor.
  • Job functions include but are not limited to:
    • Prepare, modify, and review scantling and outfitting drawings and analyses against applicable class society and regulatory rules.
    • Perform detailed design/drafting of marine craft structures, plans, and outfitting for new shipbuilding and repair/conversion.
    • Perform general structural calculations using 1st principal methods and/or finite element analysis.
    • Review of construction packages and 3D model created by 3D design software such as FORAN or Ship Constructor, against the approved design package. And work towards solutions if problematic issues are observed.
    • Interpret regulatory and classification society rules.
    • Perform heavy lift calculations.
    • Perform stability calculations and checks.
    • Use software such as GHS, Flow 3D, femap/Nastran and any other new software the company may decide to use.
    • Providing solutions to complex structural and shipbuilding problems that arise daily in production.
    • Assist in the integration of the design in Production and work closely with shipyard personnel.
    • Be able to perform basic relevant calculations independently.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Reporting Relationship

This position will be reported to the Design Group Manager or Director of Engineering Commercial Projects.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience:
  • Bachelor of Science in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or other related disciplines.
  • 5-10 years of experience in a ship-design/shipbuilding environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, AutoCAD, and Rhinoceros.
  • Capable of learning department-specific software programs to assist in various analyses.
  • Ability to review and understand ship structural and outfitting drawings.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Expertise of GHS, FEA software is required.
  • Experience with ABS/USCG and FORAN/Ship Constructor is highly desirable.
  • Technical writing skills.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship, Permanent Resident Card, or other Work Authorization is preferred.
