To build a sustainably profitable book of Retail and Wholesale International Marine, Energy and Industrial Risks business in the International / Global Specialty Organisation.

Reporting Relationships
  • Reports directly to the CUO for International.
  • Will be a member of the following committees including Underwriting & Claims Committee, Reserve Committee, Delegated Underwriting & Claims Committee, Risk Steering Committee and Product Oversight Group, plus others where relevant.

Job Responsibilities & Competencies

International Head of Marine, Energy and Industrial Risks
  • Develop business plans and long term strategy for the above product lines to continue Global Specialty's ongoing success in the International sector, including Business to be written both on Lloyd's Syndicate and Insurance Company paper.
  • Work with actuaries to enhance existing pricing models and build models where they do not exist.
  • In conjunction with the Ceded Re function, review and design the most efficient reinsurance structure for the business .
  • Produce and develop new business through distribution lines in the London Market and through the broker networks within the International market.
  • Review opportunities to build out a network of Underwriters in the Global Specialty International network of offices.
  • Creation and execution of the marketing strategy and marketing material; including travel and marketing of the The Hartford, Global Specialty brand within new and existing territories for International Marine.
  • Contribute to the identification and development of new packaged products across the Marine portfolios.
  • Ensure compliance with Global Specialty best practice and any local regulations at all times.
  • Contribute, as required, to the quarterly and annual reporting of Underwriting results.
  • Communicate objectives of the International Marine business plan to the International Marine team.
  • Input into the development and review of the Division's underwriting plans, policies and guidelines ensuring that all Business lines have these in place.
  • Providing assurance to the Chief Underwriting Officer on the extent to which the Syndicate's underwriting policies and guidelines are being met by the business lines.
  • Where these underwriting standards are not being met to provide guidance to the Chief Underwriting Officer on where there are shortfalls and recommendations on how to address the shortfalls.
  • Input into the strategy around growth of existing product segments as well as analysis of new products in the Marine, Energy and Industrial Risks area to add to Hartford Global Specialty International's product offering.
  • Input and engagement into business planning process, specifically in relation to preparation of the SBF.

Independent Audit, Internal Underwriting Audit and Peer Review
  • Ensuring that all Business Lines are subjected to regular Independent Audit reviews with a clear instruction as to what should be looked at mapped out prior to the audit taking place and ensuring that all recommendations that Underwriting Management deem appropriate are implemented and complied with.
  • Ensuring that all Business Lines are subjected to annual Internal Underwriting Reviews in a timely manner and all action points highlighted are acted upon.
  • Ensuring that all Business Lines are conducting timely and thorough peer review of an agreed selection of risks and that all trends are reported to the Chief Underwriting Officer.
  • Carrying out underwriting reviews on an ad hoc basis of key classes of business written into the Marine, Energy and Industrial Risks Division and thematic reviews of these where time and expertise allows.

Coverholder Management
  • Ensuring that there is an effective strategy and effective control framework for Coverholder management within the Division.
  • Ensuring Business Lines within Marine, Energy and Industrial Risks are operating to the Group and Lloyd's standards in respect of the management of Binders and Coverholders.
  • Assisting the Chairman of the Delegated Underwriting Committee in providing an effective control framework over the underwriting, claims, operational, legal / regulatory and financial aspects of external delegated authority underwriting across the Division.
  • In conjunction with the Delegated Underwriting Team (Operations/Administrative functions), monitor EPI management and implement policies around EPI management for all lines of business with Marine, Energy and Industrial Risks.
