At Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), we solve national security challenges through simultaneous excellence! The Plutonium Capability Low Level Waste and WCRRF Waste Operations (NPI-10) is looking for a highly motivated individual to serve as level 3 Nuclear Material Specialist to join our TA-55 LLW Operations. NPI-10 ensures safe, efficient, and compliant waste management generated at the TA-55 Plutonium Facility, the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research (CMR) building, the TA-50 Radioactive Liquid Waste Treatment Facility (RLWTF), and the Radiological Laboratory Utility Office Building (RLUOB). The Nuclear Materials Specialist Coordinates nuclear material management activities including, but not limited to, nuclear materials inventory analysis, rad data analysis, reporting, forecasting and distribution to meet Laboratory and Department of Energy (DOE)-level customer needs and requirements for NPI-10 Container Waste Facilities (CWF). Qualified person will prepare nuclear material item adjustments to inventory data reports, while assisting managers in optimizing processing, shipping, storage and packaging of nuclear material/nuclear waste. Applies sound and expert knowledge of Laboratory special nuclear materials processing, storage, control, and disposition. Interact regularly with Nuclear Material Team, Nuclear Material Control and Accounting team and NMCA and TID custodians and staff to manage accountable material for NPI-10 CWF. Assists in the development of work process improvements to meet customer needs.

Minimum Job Requirements:
Communication: Ability to follow detailed procedures effectively, both orally and in writing and demonstrated experience in aiding in the preparation of reports.
Skills/Expertise: Ability to operate mechanical equipment such as forklifts or other types of mechanical lifting devices. Ability to work with radioactive or other hazardous materials as dictated by programmatic needs. Basic knowledge of handling and/or transporting hazardous wastes and hazardous materials. Ability to understand inspection and/or characterization data on waste containers.
Teamwork: Understands success in a team environment and the need for collaborative behavior.
Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree in sciences and 8 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to nuclear material, waste worker and rad worker to this occupation.
DOE Order 426.2 : High School Diploma and 3 years of Nuclear Experience. Full-time related academic training (e.g., degree programs, trade schools, and vocational programs) may be substituted on a one-for-one basis for up to two years of nuclear experience.

Nuclear Materials Specialist 3
- Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees. Assures safety and security compliance, maintains required safety and security training, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.
- Adheres to nuclear materials management policies, programs, procedures and practices including Fissile Material Handler (FMH) worker, FMH supervisor responsibilities.
- Perform and evaluates information or data related to the processing, storage, disposition, and packaging of nuclear materials; recommends sound, practical solutions to complex issues.
- Recognized as a knowledgeable and experienced resource within field, internal to the Laboratory.
- Work is accomplished under very minimal direction.
- Recognized authority with nuclear materials management peers.
- Provides training and mentorship to others on the topic of nuclear materials management and criticality safety including attending NCSB meetings and CSO meetings.
- Prepares documents and reports associated with nuclear material processing, storage and shipping.
- Must maintain NMCA training and qualifications to be a Material Balance Area (MBA) custodian, LANMAS/LAMCAS User and TID qualified user at multiple MBAs at multiple TAs within NPI-10 CWF.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Recognized expert knowledge of nuclear materials management, including special nuclear materials processing, storage, control, disposition and distribution.
- Sound knowledge of radioactive data sheet analysis, including planning, reporting and controlling. Working knowledge of classified computing and classified document handling requirements.
- Working knowledge of LANMAS queries, forms, and reports.
- Broad knowledge of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards and guides including PVDs, IAs, TOS and other NMCA requirements.
- Broad knowledge of industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to nuclear materials management. General understanding of project management principles and practices.
- Specialized knowledge and experience in at least one of the following: nuclear facility operations, application of MC&A requirements of nuclear D&D, chemical/physical processes dealing with nuclear material.
- Knowledge of non-destructive assay methods, material types (MT) and Item Description Code (IDC).
- Derivative Classifier is suggested. Also, training in Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) is required.
