The Nuclear Safety Specialist I is responsible for providing services which may include, but are not limited to, the following primary responsibilities: consultations with DOE, planning, and coordinating activities. Supports development; reviews and implements nuclear facility safety documentation, including Document Safety Analyses (DSAs) and Safety Evaluation Reports (SERS).
  • Administers and coordinates radiation protection programs (RPPs) for DOE, including independent evaluations.
  • Support implementation and compliance with DOE orders and Federal Regulations.
  • Evaluates RPPs to determine whether they comply with applicable codes, standards, guides, regulations, Orders, and accepted practices.
  • Develop and review the safety basis and other documents.
  • Supports implementation and compliance with DOE Orders and Federal Regulations
  • Review Office and contractor performance to identify trends indicative of performance or compliance status.
  • Develops, reviews, and implements radiation control policy, including emergency preparedness and response.
  • Appraises facilities, procedures, and operations to determine their adequacy to protect workers and the public from the effects of ionizing radiation.
  • Other duties as assigned within the scope of the role.

Education
  • BS degree in Mathematics, Engineering, Physical Science, or related technical degree from an accredited university.

Experience
  • Minimum of five (5) years demonstrable experience with environmental laws, rules, and regulations to include both federal and applicable state requirements.
  • Experience in functions such as surveillance, audits, and assessments of operating facilities is required.
  • DOE environmental remediation project experience preferred.

License, Cert or Registration
  • Current driver's license if driving is required in the job or if needed for security clearance
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or authorization to work in the U.S.

Special knowledge, skills, & abilities
  • Knowledge and experience with 10 CFR 830.204, Documented Safety Analysis, DOE Guide 421.1-2, and safety basic requirements for environmental restoration and decommissioning activities.
  • Knowledge of DOE 0 231. B (radiological portion), 458.1 and 10 CFR 835.
  • General knowledge of hazardous materials storage requirements.
  • This position requires the ability to write routine reports and correspondence, and to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Must demonstrate ethics, responsibility, confidentiality, professionalism, punctuality, and consistent dependability, organizational skills, ability to perform multi-task productivity standards established, and must function well as a part of a team.
  • Must possess problem-solving skills and the capability to prioritize daily work schedule in keeping with productivity standards.
