The Sustainability and Energy Manager reports to the Executive Director of Utilities and Energy with primary responsibility to oversee programs focused on sustainability, strategic energy management, and climate resilience. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Minimum Requirements:
A bachelor's degree and three years relevant program experience.

CEM or ACEM certification

Job Summary:
The Sustainability and Energy Manager reports to the Executive Director of Utilities and Energy with primary responsibility to oversee programs focused on sustainability, strategic energy management, and climate resilience. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Managing assigned special projects
- Identifying, submitting applications, and securing grants to defray expense in energy and resiliency efforts
- Collecting data and preparing reports for internal executive committee, regulatory, and accrediting organization reporting
- Representing MUSC on local and regional boards and committees, as assigned
- Maintain energy utility data for billing, reporting, and forecasting
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Planning & Policy Development (20%)
- Establish organizational sustainability goals and develop policies aligned with MUSC's mission.
- Implement strategies to address environmental concerns, including energy and water conservation, pollution reduction, recycling, sustainable building design, transportation, and climate resilience.
- Analyze current policies and processes to identify areas for improvement.
- Lead the President's Climate Commitment, developing a science-based Climate Action Plan informed by bi-annual greenhouse gas audits measuring Scope I, II, and III emissions.
- Prepare reports, presentations, and proposals for executive leadership and key stakeholders.
Utility Conservation & Renewable Energy Projects (20%)
- Develop and evaluate projects aimed at reducing utility consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and costs.
- Establish metrics and monitoring systems to track sustainability goals.
- Advise mechanical, electrical, and HVAC teams on energy conservation strategies.
- Conduct building audits and recommend efficiency improvements.
- Maintain a retro-commissioning program and work toward continuous commissioning goals.
- Manage utility incentive and rebate programs with providers such as Dominion, Duke, and Santee Cooper.
Energy Data Management & Budgeting (20%)
- Oversee $30+ million in utility consumption and cost allocation for chargebacks and budgeting.
- Implement and maintain AIM EM software for financial reporting.
- Develop and maintain utility data reports, graphics, benchmarks, and cost savings targets.
- Prepare annual reports for the SC Energy Office.
- Monitor utility rate schedules.
Strategic Energy Management (10%)
- Develop a Strategic Energy Management (SEM) program integrating energy efficiency into organizational practices.
- Collaborate with energy partners and contractors to achieve SEM milestones.
- Establish and maintain energy-related policies, including a Temperature Policy.
- Lead initiatives such as ISO 50001 Ready certification.
Grant Development & Funding (10%)
- Identify and pursue funding opportunities for sustainability initiatives.
- Manage the grantmaking process, including budgeting, documentation, compliance, and tracking results.
Stakeholder Engagement & Communications (10%)
- Collaborate with internal media teams to foster staff engagement in sustainability efforts.
- Maintain the MUSC Sustainability webpage and social media presence.
- Organize events such as Earth Day and develop in-service training programs.
Community Engagement & Advocacy (10%)
- Represent MUSC sustainability efforts on local and regional boards and committees.
- Partner with public, private, and non-profit organizations to advance campus resilience initiatives.
- Participate in committees, including the City of Charleston Resilience and Sustainability Committee, Charleston Heat Research Team, MUSC Bike Share Committee, and others.
