Description

Under general supervision, and with latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment, performs installation, repair, and maintenance work in construction and maintenance of the City's water distribution and/or wastewater collection systems. Employees in this classification have previous experience in utilities installation, repair and maintenance, and typically function as part of work crew in accomplishing work orders.
Examples of Duties

  • Works with utilities crews in installation, repair and maintenance of distribution and/or collection lines, to include the operation of various equipment as directed, i.e., jet machines, tapping machines, winch cranes, trucks, tractors.
  • Conducts various repairs for distribution and collection systems of the City, i.e., leaks, main breaks, manholes, faulty valves, broken fire hydrants.
  • Performs manual excavation duties, i.e., digging tunnels, channels, work space.
  • Flushes lines in correcting water/wastewater stoppages and blockages in mains.
  • Installs, repairs, locates and/or replaces water taps, water meters, meter boxes, lines, valves, backflow preventers, flow test hydrants, relief valves, and related attendant devices.
  • Ensures the safe operating conditions per work site, i.e., setting barricades, cones, and signs; monitoring and directing traffic.
  • Performs pre-inspection and post inspection on all vehicles, equipment, and/or machinery operated; maintains inspection log.
  • Operates a variety of small equipment such as jack hammers, concrete saws, chain saws, compactors, concrete sprayers.
  • Uses a variety of hand held tools and equipment applicable to assigned work area, i.e., shovels, rakes, trowels, manual and skill saws, brooms, pipe cutters.
  • Observes safe and proper operating procedures when operating trucks, equipment, machinery, and/or tools, in accordance with established and prescribed standards.
  • Performs routine cleaning and preventive maintenance of assigned trucks, equipment,machinery, and/or tools to maintain safe and proper operating condition.
  • Documents work performed in a daily log, turns the log into the supervisor; communicates regularly with the supervisor throughout the day as the need arises.
  • Paints identification marks on meter boxes, valve boxes, pipes, roads, and curbs.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Must possess a high school diploma or GED with three (3) years' experience in the
construction, repair, and maintenance of underground utility systems (Water Distribution
and Wastewater Collection specifically); experience must include repairing and/or
installing water/sewer pipes up to 24" for gravity and force lines and work with different
materials (RCP, DI, CI, among others).

Attainment of Water Distribution license level three (3) and Wastewater Collection
Technician class "C" certification; or the ability to obtain within 1 year from date of hire.

Additional education and experience or an equivalent combination of training and
experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position
may be substituted for the above requirements.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license with satisfactory driving record
held throughout employment.

Must establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees,
supervisors, division and department heads, public/private sector contacts, and City
contractors
