Job Title: Nuclear Materials Specialist

What You Will Do:

  • Nuclear Material Management: Coordinate activities related to nuclear materials management, including inventory analysis, radiation data analysis, and reporting to fulfill both Laboratory and Department of Energy (DOE) customer requirements for the Container Waste Facilities (CWF).
  • Inventory Reporting: Prepare nuclear material item adjustments to inventory data reports and assist managers in optimizing processes such as shipping, storage, and packaging of nuclear materials and waste.
  • Safety and Compliance: Uphold safety and security as a primary responsibility by adhering to nuclear materials management policies and procedures. This includes maintaining required training and recognizing when to stop work for safety or security reasons.
  • Process Improvement: Assist in developing work process enhancements tailored to meet customer needs and contribute to compliance with procedural requirements and guidelines.
  • Data Evaluation: Perform evaluations of data related to the processing, storage, and packaging of nuclear materials and recommend practical solutions to any complex challenges.
  • Mentorship and Training: Provide training and mentorship to fellow employees on nuclear materials management and criticality safety. Attend Nuclear Criticality Safety Board (NCSB) and Criticality Safety Officer (CSO) meetings to stay informed.
  • Documentation: Prepare comprehensive documents and reports related to nuclear material processing, storage, and shipping, ensuring all reporting meets established standards.

What You Need: Minimum Qualifications:

  • Expert knowledge of nuclear materials management, including the processing, storage, control, and disposition of special nuclear materials.
  • Proficient in radioactive data sheet analysis and reporting.
  • Familiarity with classified computing and document handling standards.
  • Broad knowledge of laboratory procedures and industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA codes and standards related to nuclear materials management.
  • General understanding of project management principles.
  • Specialized expertise in areas such as nuclear facility operations and chemical/physical processes involving nuclear material.
  • Training in Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and Derivative Classification is recommended.

Skills & Experience:

  • Ability to effectively follow detailed procedures and prepare reports.
  • Experience operating mechanical equipment, like forklifts, necessary for moving hazardous materials.
  • Strong teamwork orientation, fostering collaborative behaviors.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in sciences with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combined education and experience.
  • For those holding a High School Diploma, a minimum of 3 years of nuclear experience is required per DOE Order 426.2.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Nuclear Facility operations, NMCA, or LANMAS.
  • Understanding of NMCA requirements as outlined in DOE O 474.2A.
  • Experience with LANMAS databases.
  • Possession of Q clearance and Fissile Material Handler qualifications, along with DOT and RCRA training.

Physical Requirements: Candidates must be able to perform essential job functions, which may include depth perception, reading vision requirements, and the ability to lift 50 pounds, among others.
