Job Summary

Under direct supervision, will be instructed to perform specific activities associated with the operation and maintenance of biological treatment processes, chemical treatment, mechanical functions, and labor operations of the wastewater treatment plants and sewage lift stations.
Essential Job Functions

• Following instruction of Certified Operators, monitor and operate wastewater treatment plant equipment such as pumps, valves, motors, filters, gauges, and meters to ensure proper functioning of the wastewater plant and sewage lift stations.
• Monitors the flow of wastewater, dissolved oxygen concentration, Chlorination and Dechlorination equipment, pH, and ammonia concentrations. Will adjust treatment processes only as instructed.
• Monitors and cleans Drying Beds as needed.
• Collects wastewater samples and interprets lab results.
• Maintains daily records and monthly reports on wastewater operations.
• Maintains a clean and safe work area in and around all the plant processes and buildings.
• Completes preventative and corrective maintenance work orders on pumps, motors, air blowers and other equipment in a timely manner.
• Performs all functions as directed to maintain grounds at treatment facilities and lift stations, including tree trimming, line trimming, mowing, sweeping, fence repairs, and similar items.
• Informs supervisor of all problems, deviations, and unfamiliar situations.
• Adheres to the personnel, safety, and department policies and procedures.
• Assist other coworkers as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• A demonstrated capability to follow instructions, understand wastewater treatment processes and terminology, and complete labor tasks without constant supervision.
• Must have basic knowledge of electromechanical and powered equipment.

Education and Experience

• Must have a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
• One or more years of experience in wastewater treatment operation is preferred.
• Must obtain a minimum Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Class D Wastewater Operator Certificate of Competency within the first six months of employment to remain in the position. At such time as qualifications for a Wastewater Plant Operator I position are met, the Apprentice position will be promoted to Plant Operator I.
