What You Will Do
The Nuclear Materials and TRU Waste Shipping (NPI-7) group is seeking a Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician 5 to join our team. NPI-7 is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant management of waste generated at the TA-55 Plutonium Facility, Chemistry and Metallurgy Research (CMR), TA-50 Radioactive Liquid Waste Treatment Facility (RLWTF), Radiological Laboratory Utility Office Building (RLUOB), Transuranic Waste Facility (TWF), and Radioassay and Nondestructive Testing Facility (RANT).
Our team members comply to nuclear management requirements and operate independently on complex, concurrent projects. Adaptability, initiative, and a collaborative culture are essential as we work together to support LANL's national security mission. This position includes both indoor and outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
As a Nuclear and Hazardous Materials Technician 5, you will collaborate closely with various organizations to support the safe and compliant management of nuclear materials and hazardous activities across the Laboratory, including TA-55.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Professional Level Experience: Advanced knowledge and experience performing PIC duties for Nuclear Materials Distribution operations andadvanced knowledge of and experience with handling and/or transporting solid, liquid, hazardous, radioactive, and/or mixed wastes. Radiological Worker II Trained. RCRA Inspection Trained. Level II Leak test Certification. CDL with Hazmat Endorsement. Certified Forklift Operator and Proficiency Instructor. Advanced knowledge on handling Type A and Type B shipping containers.
Regulations/Compliance: Advanced knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations relating to the handling of solid, liquid, hazardous, radioactive, and/or mixed wastes; advanced understanding of work hazards, safety practices, and operating policies and procedures.
DOE: DOE Order 426.2 requires high school diploma.
Education: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 7 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
Clearance: Active Q clearance, and Human Reliability Program (HRP) Certification.
Policy/Procedures: Advanced knowledge of the Laboratory's nuclear material handling policies, practices, and procedures; demonstrated experience managing RCRA waste storage areas including knowledge of chemical storage, segregation, and handling requirements; advanced knowledge and experience with material handling policies and procedures.
Training/Certifications: Radworker, HAZWOPER, RCRA certification, and the ability to obtain certification as a forklift and/or forklift proficiency instructor. TA-55, RLUOB and/or CMR site specific training. FMHrequired relevant certification and training.

Key responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Handling and transporting drums and other containers of hazardous and radioactive materials.
- Lifting and documenting materials exhibiting chemical and radiological hazards in accordance with written work instructions.
- Packaging and staging fissile materials in compliance with criticality safety limits.
- Operating mechanical lifting equipment, including electric and diesel-powered forklifts and drum handlers.
- Managing RCRA waste storage areas, including applying proper chemical storage, segregation, and handling practices.
- Contributing to the development and review of Integrated Work Documents (IWDs), Detailed Operating Procedures (DOPs), and other work planning documents.
- Maintaining accurate records for storage areas, inventory tracking, routine inspections, waste profiles, disposal requests, shipping documentation, and waste characterization data.
- Supporting a respectful and inclusive work environment, free from discrimination and harassment.
- Adhering to established procedures for routine tasks and ensuring compliance with all safety and regulatory requirements.
