As part of the Associate Lab Directorate for Weapons Production (ALDWP), the work we do for the Weapons Mission Services - Operational Performance Assurance (WMS-4) group, directly affects mission success across Los Alamos National Laboratory.
The WMS-4 group is hiring (2) Nuclear Operations Professional (NOP) for the Conduct of Operations and Senior Supervisory Watch (SSW) team. The NOP will provide mentorship, oversight, project support to Conduct of Operations and SSW initiatives. Additionally, the NOP may be appointed to and serve as a member of the Senior Supervisory Watch, in which they will support oversight and preparation for readiness activities leading to Management Self-Assessments (MSAs) of new or restarted nuclear operations.
The selected candidate(s) will need to be an excellent problem-solver and be able to anticipate challenges or obstacles and tactfully resolve them with minimal supervision. This position works collaboratively with a broad range of staff from different organizations, as well as staff and contractors assigned to the organization and to assessment teams. The NOP will develop and implement process improvements, provide on-going technical conduct of operations/readiness and support group initiatives as directed by the Division. The candidate may be asked to support backshift work occasionally.
This position will be filled at the NOP 3/4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Nuclear Operations Professional 3 ($114,700 - $191,200)
The NOP 3 will report to the ConOps/SSW First Line Manager and will provide Conduct of Operations mentoring and coaching to workers and supervisors within ALDWP as assigned. Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees therefore maintains required safety and security training, assures safety and security compliance, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security. Serves as the primary interface between the division and line management for mid-sized and/or moderately complex assignments. Apply knowledge and experience to develop instructions, procedures, standing orders, and reports. Demonstrates good judgment in negotiating with line managers to ensure that resources are available to accomplish the work, and to marshal resources to complete assigned deliverables. Under limited direction, monitors performance and manages, under change control, the assignment scope, schedule, budget, and technical baselines. Integrates moderately complex project work with other LANL priorities and commitments and business imperatives. Demonstrates good judgment in identifying potential project risks, developing risk mitigation strategies and corrective actions, and recommending risk acceptance/avoidance for all aspects of the project(s). Additionally, the NOP 3 may be appointed to serve as a readiness team leader for management self-assessment (MSA) of new or restarted nuclear operations. They may also be appointed to serve as senior supervisory watch (SSW) in the safety oversight of nuclear operations and activities as assigned. For assignments falling under the oversight of a LANL program such as P315 Conduct of Operations Manual.
Nuclear Operations Professional 4 ($138,500 - $233,200)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the NOP 4 provides oversight and project management to complex projects. This individual will be expected to support the initiation, development, and execution of the Integrated Conduct of Operations program within ALDWP. The NOP 4 will likely serve SSW appointments, participate in readiness activities, and will be expected to provide extensive and effective mentorship to NOP 3s, and to the workforce as assigned through the Integrated Conduct of Operations program. Provides leadership and tactical planning for execution of large and/or complex assignments. Integrates large and/or complex project work with other LANL priorities and commitments and business imperatives. The NOP 4 serves as a subject matter expert in Conduct of Operations, and in all aspects of Integrated Safety Management.

Education/Experience at NOP 4 level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 12 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
