JOB PURPOSE

We are seeking a passionate and experienced HVAC/R & Controls Instructor and Technical Trainer.

This role is ideal for a seasoned professional with deep expertise in commercial refrigeration, HVAC systems, building automation controls, and digital/analog I/O programming. The Instructor will lead the development and delivery of high-impact training programs that prepare technicians to work with advanced mechanical systems and smart building technologies. This role will lead both classroom and hands-on instruction, ensuring learners gain practical, job-ready skills.

Reports to: Director of Technical Services

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead Instruction: Serve as the lead instructor for technical training programs focused on HVAC/R systems, BAS/EMS controls, and programming fundamentals.
  • Develop Training Content: Design and update curriculum and course materials that reflect current industry standards and technologies in HVAC, refrigeration, and building controls.
  • Deliver Hands-On Training: Facilitate engaging, lab-based instruction that emphasizes diagnostics, troubleshooting, and system optimization, including digital and analog I/O and control logic programming.
  • Customize Teaching Methods: Adapt instructional approaches to meet the needs of diverse learners and skill levels.
  • Evaluate Performance: Assess trainee progress through written tests, hands-on evaluations, and real-world simulations.
  • Collaborate with SMEs: Work closely with internal subject matter experts and field technicians to ensure training content is accurate and relevant.
  • Stay Current: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of HVAC/R technologies, refrigerants, energy efficiency standards, and control systems.
  • Ensure Compliance: Ensure all training programs meet applicable regulatory and safety standards, including EPA Section 608, ASHRAE guidelines, and local licensing requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Industry Experience: 10+ years of industry experience, with a strong background in commercial HVAC, refrigeration, and controls.
  • Instructional Experience: Experience as an instructor or technical trainer, delivering both classroom and hands-on instruction.
  • Controls & Programming Expertise: Proficiency in digital and analog I/O, BAS/EMS systems, and HVAC/R programming.
  • Training Development: Proven ability to design and implement technical training programs tailored to various skill levels.
  • Communication Skills: Strong presentation, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Travel Flexibility: Willingness to travel up to 25% to support training at other locations.

Preferred Skills & Experience
  • Trade License in HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, or plumbing is a plus
  • Certifications such as EPA 608, NATE, or HVAC Excellence.
  • Familiarity with digital learning tools, simulation software, and instructional design.
  • Background in corporate training or technical education institutions.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and instruct for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working in lab or workshop environments for hands-on training sessions involving HVAC/R equipment and control systems.
