Job Description
The Wastewater Operator I / II will support the Senior Plant Operators and Utility Maintenance Technicians in the operation and maintenance of Wastewater Treatment Plants and lift stations. This is a safety-sensitive and/or DOT position. Therefore, participation in random drug testing at the city will be mandatory.

Wastewater Operator I (Minimum $16.61 Maximum $24.08)

  • Inspect pumps, motors, and related equipment for operational efficiency.
  • Record KWH readings and maintain charts for equipment performance.
  • Perform routine maintenance, lubrication, and minor repairs as directed.
  • Conduct daily cleaning of tanks, basins, and grounds.
  • Conduct regular rounds on all wastewater treatment plants and lift stations.
  • Conduct various plant control tests, as necessary.
  • Accurately record test readings and maintain documentation.
  • Assist Senior Plant Operators and Utility Maintenance Technicians in routine tasks.
  • Maintain equipment records through diligent data entry.
  • Subject to on-call rotation for after-hours and weekend availability, including overtime as needed.
  • Perform assigned duties as assigned.

Wastewater Operator II (Minimum $19.37 Maximum $28.08)

  • Performs all duties of the Wastewater Operator I
  • Assist in training Wastewater Operator I
  • Work under limited and/or moderate supervision performing more complex tasks.
  • Must pass all proficiency requirements.

Must be able to provide services for the benefit of the public during emergency situations that threaten the safety of League City's citizens, and that, City employees must be able to work immediately before, during, or immediately after an emergency.
Minimum Qualifications

Required
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Valid Driver's License

Wastewater Operator I
Must meet all required minimum qualifications in addition to the following:
  • Obtain Class D Wastewater Operator license within 18 months of hire date.

Wastewater Operator II
Must meet all required minimum qualifications in addition to the following:
  • Must have a Class C Wastewater Operator license.

Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience that offer the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position may be substituted or assessed at the City's discretion.
Supplemental Information

Knowledge of:
  • Wastewater collection and treatment process

Skills in:
  • Operating and maintaining pumps, motors, and utilizing proper sampling techniques.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

Ability to:
  • Identify irregularities in wastewater treatment operations and equipment during routine observation.
  • Carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Communicate effectively when dealing with resident complaints and department personnel.
  • Adapt and maintain flexibility in scheduling to accommodate overtime, special projects, start-ups, and promptly respond to emergencies.

This position entails a wide range of physical duties, including but not limited to standing, walking, lifting (up to 100 pounds), carrying, handling, reaching, kneeling, sitting, exerting pressure (up to 50 lbs.), climbing, balancing, bending, crouching, twisting, crawling, and operating foot controls. Additionally, it requires agility and precise manual dexterity, along with a heightened awareness of one's environment, utilizing the senses of vision, hearing, and verbal communication.

Employees will work in adverse weather conditions such as high temperatures, humidity, prolonged sun exposure, rain, and sleet. Work may also involve contact with chemicals, fumes, dust, insects, noxious plants, snakes, and other wildlife.
