Job Summary

Job Description Title- Maintenance Technician

Reports To: Supervisor of Transportation and Maintenance

FLSA Designation: Non-Exempt

Job Goal: To repair and maintain district facilities to ensure efficient operation at all locations

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
  2. Five years' experience of a skilled trade or general building maintenance or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position
  3. Possess and maintain a valid driver's license
  4. Must obtain a criminal history background clearance and meet the suitability criteria for employment under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457

Skills and Physical Abilities:
  • Ability to operate and maintain needed tools and diagnostic equipment
  • Must have knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and practices used in the building, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, or mechanical crafts.
  • Must be skilled in the use of a variety of standard hand tools, power tools, machines, and equipment.
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and written reference material
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve problems
  • Possess the physical ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. This includes lifting at least 75 pounds and pushing or pulling at least 100 pounds.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
  1. Work in one or more building trades (general construction, electrical, plumbing, locks and keys) to keep buildings in safe and operable conditions.
  2. Repair equipment, floors, roofs, ceilings, walls, electrical, plumbing, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the safe and efficient utilization of space.
  3. Receive and complete work orders.
  4. Select material and hardware and make time and materials estimates.
  5. Maintain accurate records on material and labor used.
  6. Maintain inventory of board-owned tools, equipment, and materials.
  7. Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean.
  8. Detect needed repairs on buildings, grounds, and equipment following established inspection procedures.
  9. Respond to emergency calls as needed.
  10. Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment.
  11. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  12. Ensure that equipment is in safe operating condition.
  13. Follow safety precautions of the specific trades and practice standard safety procedures at all time.
  14. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
  15. Engages in personal professional growth, ongoing training, and demonstrates professional ethics and leadership.
  16. Engages in required orientations, trainings, safety instruction, and meetings as required for effective job performance and/or advancement.
  17. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  18. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  19. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws/regulations.
  20. All other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor or supervisor's designee.

Terms of employment: 240-days

Daily work schedule will be determined by supervisor or his/her designee for the necessary operations of the school system. Work assignments and schedules are subject to change.

Salary:

Approved salary schedule for Bus Shop and Maintenance Personnel is located on the Human Resources webpage. Salary for personnel is set at appropriate step and rank on adopted salary schedule based on skill level and experience. Annual salary is based on a 40-hour week.

Evaluation:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the support personnel evaluation system and board policy.
