Job Description
As a Utilities Mechanic B, you'll play a hands-on role in keeping the University of Notre Dame's Power Plant and utilities systems running safely, efficiently, and reliably. This is an entry-level position designed for mechanically skilled individuals who are eager to learn and grow through a structured training program, coursework, and on-the-job experience. You'll work alongside experienced team members to maintain, inspect, and repair the critical systems that power our campus.

Job Description
As a Utilities Mechanic B, you'll play a hands-on role in keeping the University of Notre Dame's Power Plant and utilities systems running safely, efficiently, and reliably. This is an entry-level position designed for mechanically skilled individuals who are eager to learn and grow through a structured training program, coursework, and on-the-job experience. You'll work alongside experienced team members to maintain, inspect, and repair the critical systems that power our campus.
Key Responsibilities
General Maintenance
- Complete assigned CMMS work orders in a timely manner, documenting all repairs and work performed.
- Operate and maintain various plant equipment as required.
Steam Generation Systems
- Inspect, clean, and repair boilers and heat recovery steam generators during scheduled maintenance or repairs.
- Perform work in compliance with EPA standards, federal regulations, and insurance requirements.
- Conduct emergency repairs to minimize downtime and maintain system reliability.
Training & Development
- Participate in ongoing training to maintain technical competence and safety standards.
- Learn new systems and equipment as they are introduced.
- Assist in training less experienced mechanics when assigned.
Auxiliary Systems & Equipment
Inspect, maintain, and repair a variety of auxiliary equipment including:
- Pumps (gear and centrifugal)
- Chillers and heat recovery chillers
- Motors, condensers, air compressors, diesel generators
- Boiler fans/drives, hot water heaters, water softeners, and cooling towers
Steam Turbine Maintenance
- Dismantle, inspect, and repair steam turbines, including turbine generators, chiller turbines, boiler feed pump turbines, and turbine-driven forced draft fans.
- Maintain associated auxiliary systems.
Turbine Mechanical Work
- Perform major overhauls, replacing worn or damaged parts, and restoring turbines to peak performance.

Qualifications
Education & Training
- One-year certificate or training from an accredited college or technical school.
- Completion of a technical school or apprenticeship program preferred.
Experience
- 1-2 years of relevant mechanical maintenance or utilities experience.
Skills & Requirements
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to follow technical procedures.
- Must complete the Utilities Department training regimen within 12 months of hire.
- Commitment to safety, attention to detail, and reliability.
