About us

The future is electric, but only if it's better - for businesses, consumers, and the planet. We bring electrification to the next level, to enable and sustain a cleaner planet.

TAE Power Solutions (TPS) is the electrification spin-off from TAE Technologies, a leader in nuclear fusion technology. The company is leveraging unique power management technology originally developed for nuclear fusion and applying it in adjacent industries including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and DC Fast Charging for electric vehicles.

We are seeking an accomplished and visionary Director of Engineering to lead our engineering teams in the design, development, and deployment of advanced Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This role will be instrumental in driving technical excellence, ensuring project delivery, and aligning engineering execution with corporate strategy. Reporting to the VP of Engineering, the Director will oversee multiple engineering leads, foster cross-functional collaboration, and establish scalable processes to support our rapid growth in the clean energy sector.

This is a full-time, remote role (HQ in Southern California) with rich benefits and a great comp package. Join us!

At TAE Power Solutions, we consider a wide range of factors when making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and job-related knowledge, training; licenses and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements depending on the position offered (non-Sr., Sr., Lead or Manager). The compensation range for this role is between $225,000-$265,000.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of engineering leads and their respective groups (hardware, systems, integration, and testing) from concept through prototype, certification, manufacturing scale-up, and successful commercial launch.
  • Provide support to VP of Engineering in translating General Manager's strategy into actionable engineering roadmaps and priorities.
  • Drive innovation in BESS technology, ensuring designs are reliable, safe, cost-effective, and compliant with evolving industry standards.
  • Champion a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement, balancing innovation, discipline, and speed.

Technical Oversight
  • Oversee system architecture and design reviews across mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines.
  • Ensure robust engineering standards, design controls, and documentation practices are in place.
  • Partner with product management and commercial teams to define requirements and deliver solutions that meet customer needs.
  • Provide technical guidance in evaluating new technologies, vendors, and materials.

Program & Project Management
  • Manage the successful execution of engineering programs from concept to commercialization.
  • Work closely with project management, operations, and manufacturing teams to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery.
  • Track KPIs for engineering performance, quality, and safety, and report progress to the VP of Engineering and executive leadership.
  • Support cross-functional alignment with supply chain, regulatory, and field service functions.

Risk & Compliance
  • Anticipate and mitigate technical risks in system design and deployment.
  • Ensure compliance with UL, IEC, NFPA, and regional safety/certification standards.
  • Support sustainability and reliability objectives, including lifecycle performance, recycling, and environmental compliance.

Required Skills:
  • 10+ years of progressive engineering leadership experience, with at least 5 years in energy storage, renewable energy, or power systems.
  • Proven track record managing multi-disciplinary engineering teams and delivering complex hardware/software products.
  • Strong understanding of BESS architecture, including PCS, EMS, battery modules/packs, and thermal management.
  • Experience with product development lifecycle (concept, prototype, validation, commercialization).
  • Familiarity with project management methodologies.
  • Exceptional communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills. Exceptional collaboration, communication, and social skills with the ability to effectively work with employees and leaders at all levels.
