Are you a seasoned professional in labour relations with a strong background in heavy industrial construction? Do you possess excellent negotiation and mediation skills? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you!

Based in the Edmonton, Alberta area, on a full-time basis, this significant opportunity is seeking a highly skilled Industrial Relations Manager to be part of a great team of a fantastic new (in the process of) energy project.

Position Overview:

The Industrial Relations Manager is a pivotal role within our client's Construction Site Management Team on large, complex industrial projects. Reporting directly to the Construction Director and collaborating closely with the regional Human Resources team, the Industrial Relations Manager plays a vital role in maintaining harmonious labour relations on our clients construction sites. This role requires expertise in collective bargaining, collective agreements, wage data, local labour trends, and employment laws.

As our client's Industrial Relations Manager, your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
  • Leading negotiations for revisions to any changes to the Project Labor Agreement (PLA).
  • Providing input on collective agreement negotiations.
  • Holding contractors accountable for workforce treatment.
  • Facilitating proper handling of grievances and issues by contractors.
  • Developing labour policies relevant to project construction job sites.
  • Administering grievance procedures and leading investigations.
  • Managing dispute resolutions involving unions, management, and employees.
  • Ensuring contract staff are well-versed in union contract compliance.
  • Advising management on labour-related issues and providing recommendations.
  • Developing and managing monthly site labour meetings.
  • Consulting with Human Resources staff regarding personnel policies.
  • Preparing documentation and reports for senior management regarding labor relations.
  • Preparing the draft Employee Handbook for site orientation.
  • Organizing and setting policy for craft transportation if required.
  • Guiding and being a key stakeholder in the Site Orientation program.


To succeed in this role, you should have the following:
  • A solid background in labour relations between the private and public sectors.
  • Strong negotiating and mediation skills.
  • Exceptional leadership skills.
  • An understanding of labour relations needs in heavy industrial projects.
  • High ethical standards with the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and effective time management.


Requirements needed:
  • Minimum of 20 years of heavy industrial construction experience.
  • 10 years of labour relations experience with construction trade unions and/or contractors.
  • A relevant post-secondary education
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of products.
  • Strong public speaking, presentation, training, and teaching skills.
  • Hold a valid and clean driver's license.
  • Legally able to work in Canada with a valid work permit/visa or Canadian Citizenship.
  • Ability to take/pass a Drug Screen test as requirement to do so.
