The Role
As the Radioactive Waste Specialist reporting to the Principal specialist, you will:
- Provide waste management expertise in support of the characterisation, processing, sentencing, and packaging of radioactive Intermediate Level Waste (ILW), Low Level Waste (LLW) and Conditionally Exempt waste (CEW) from the Devonport Site.
- Provide advice and guidance to major projects to enable timely treatment and/or disposal of their radioactive waste arisings.
- As the Radioactive Waste Specialist you will develop and implement relevant documentation, ensuring compliance with licences and permits relating to radioactive waste through the application of BAT.
- Provide leadership and training to more junior waste engineers in the team.
- Have an ability to effectively liaise with customer / vendors / suppliers with regards to radioactive waste matters.
As the Radioactive Waste Specialist, you must have:
- An applied understanding of radioactive waste management including characterisation, processing, sentencing, packaging, and transport.
- Extensive knowledge of environmental legislation in the UK Nuclear Industry.
- Determination and application of BAT and the presentation of suitably underpinned and justifiable supporting arguments.
- Can work well within a team as well as provide leadership and training to members of the team.
- Extensive radioactive waste management qualifications and / or experience is essential.
- Eligibility for SC clearance is essential.
- Agreement to work in areas which will expose individual to ionising radiation (radiation worker).
- Membership of a professional society is desirable.
