The Process Unit Operator, Borger Refinery works rotating shifts in various units within the Borger Refinery which process or produce crude oil, petroleum coke, gasoline, diesel, steam and many other products. Some of the processes involved use hazardous and volatile materials under high temperature and pressure. In addition, Operators perform various duties required to keep their assigned processing unit/area operating safely and at specified production rates.

Employees may advance within the Operator pay progression based on time requirements and/or on skills progression. Entry level rate of pay for an Operator trainee is $30.05/hour with pay increases up to $36.11 once fully unit qualified. An Operator can reach top Operator pay at a minimum of 36 months of time within the Operator classification which is currently $46.25/hour. Operators may progress to the lead position of Stillman. This position is expected to start in August 2024.

Candidates who receive an offer of employment will then be required to successfully complete a pre-employment due diligence process including background check, medical, hearing, respiratory and vision exams and agility testing.

Responsibilities May Include:
  • Monitoring unit operations
  • Turning valves
  • Taking gauge and instrument readings
  • Lubricating and performing minor maintenance of equipment
  • Making necessary changes to ensure product is manufactured on specification
  • Responding to safety and environmental incidents, should they occur, in a safe and efficient manner
  • Entering and retrieving computer data as well as data analysis
  • Performing work activities that include pulling, lifting, twisting, working in confined spaces and on elevated platforms requiring fall protection
  • Climbing heights to perform duties such as opening valves
  • Collecting process samples with potential to require fresh air
  • Preparing equipment for maintenance

Required Qualifications:
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions
  • High School Diploma/GED equivalent
  • Currently hold (and able to maintain) a valid driver's license
  • Willingness and ability to perform/comply with the following, with or without reasonable accommodation:
    • Work at least a 12-hour rotating shift, which includes some weekends and holidays
    • Work overtime
    • Assume on-call responsibilities
    • Work in enclosed spaces, such as tanks and silos
    • Work near large, hot, high-speed machines
    • Climb up to 250 feet in height
    • Lift up to 50 pounds
    • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
    • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)
    • Maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
    • Perform firefighting duties
    • Work outside in harsh weather conditions
    • Work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and at high temperatures
    • Evacuate in a safe and timely manner in the event of an emergency
    • Read at a level to understand written safety procedures, work procedures, work permits, instruction manuals
    • Learn computer software associated with process operations

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate's Degree or higher in Process Technology or Engineering
  • 3 or more years of work experience in manufacturing, heavy industry (including energy / oil & gas), public safety, and/or military

The Borger Refinery is located in Borger, Texas, in the Texas Panhandle, approximately 50 miles north of Amarillo, Texas. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes primarily medium sour crude oil produced locally, and heavy sour crude oil produced in Canada, all of which are delivered by pipeline. Borger produces a high percentage of transportation fuels, as well as petroleum coke, NGLs and solvents. Refined products are distributed to customers via pipelines from the refinery to West Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and the Midcontinent region.
