The Laboratory Technician, Rodeo Renewable Energy Complex performs a variety of analysis and tests of refinery products, process streams, and environmental samples in a technically complex, highly automated refinery laboratory. Technicians will work a rotating day/evening schedule including weekends and holidays.

This position requires the successful completion of an online assessment. Responsibilities May Include:
  • Performing routine minor maintenance on laboratory equipment.
  • Performing various quality assurance and quality control tests on product/process samples according to written procedures.
  • Perform process, regulatory, and product certification testing using approved methods. Such testing must be completed accurately, efficiently and timely.
  • Assisting in setting up and developing procedures for various instrumentation and testing processes.
  • Reviewing data using lab information management system.
  • Interpreting data and analyzing validity.
  • Running typical QA/QC charts to interpret trends and quality of results.
  • Documenting and recording findings according to established procedures.
  • Occasionally required to work outdoors with exposure to weather elements; some lifting is required.
  • Being aware and observing safe work practices including donning/use of personal protective equipment.

Required Qualifications:
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions
  • Valid driver's license
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • At least 18 years of age or older
  • Ability to read/interpret technical and job-related materials in English
  • Willing and able to learn computer software associated with laboratory testing
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Information can be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic
  • Willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to perform and comply with:
    • Work a 12-hour rotating shift including weekends, holidays, day/night rotation, and overtime.
    • Work overtime and be on an on-call basis, as assigned
    • Work around chemicals including acids and bases
    • Wear Nomex fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment such as steel-toed shoes, ear/eye protection, hard hat, chemical gloves, etc
    • Maintain clean shaven face each day to assure respirator/face mask can properly seal
    • Perform firefighting and/or emergency response duties, as needed
    • Work in and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions Work with hydrocarbons under high pressure and/or heat
    • Lift up to 50 pounds, as needed
    • Satisfy physical criteria for the position (may include walking, standing, bending, climbing, lifting, and stooping), including serving on and maintaining emergency response responsibilities and associated training requirements
    • Complete and pass skills assessment and functional capability (physical agility) testing

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree in Chemistry (or related field) OR demonstrated proficiency with laboratory test equipment OR previous military experience in a related field
  • Previous refining and/or petrochemical experience
  • Knowledge of applicable ASTM, EPA, Federal, State, County regulatory requirements
  • Previous experience and/or ability to learn/perform all procedures used in a Quality Control Lab for product testing
  • Demonstrated communications skills (verbal/written) and previous experience working in team environment
  • Previous SAP experience

The Rodeo Renewable Energy Complex is a state-of-the-art facilityprocessing renewable feedstocks (waste oils, fats, greases, and vegetable oils) to produce vital transportation fuels, including renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuels for California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. The Rodeo facility has been providing energy and improving lives since 1896. The conversion from crude oil to renewable feedstocks was completed in early 2024, enabling the production of lower carbon-intensity transportation fuels. The converted facility reduces lifecycle carbon emissions by approximately 65% - the equivalent of taking 1.4 million cars off California roads each year. Compensation

The base pay range for this position is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Currently, this range is $34.09/hour to $48.89/hour.
