As an Experimental Operations Specialist with the Aero Thermal and Mechanical Systems (ATMS) organization, you will work with a diverse research team to deliver new technology for the Aerospace industry, including propulsion, aviation systems, services, and the future of flight. The Experimental Operations Specialist will lead daily operations and coordination with researchers, facilities, trades, and vendors to assure the safe operation of systems and machinery that enable the testing of new fluid-thermal and combustion technologies. A successful candidate will execute day to day operations and support the Experimental Operations Leader with planning and execution of test facility improvements, maintenance, and outage resolution.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Safe operation of test facility infrastructure that enables test operations.
  • Responsible for daily operation of essential infrastructure supporting the testing of fluid-thermal and combustion components
  • Operate and maintain major mechanical equipment used for research testing.
  • Execute and track preventative maintenance plans for equipment and subsystems and incorporate continual process improvement.
  • Troubleshoot issues with existing research hardware and return hardware to service.
  • Coordinate with researchers, facilities, trades, and vendors to complete hardware maintenance, repair, and installation.
  • Work with project and facilities stakeholders to identify and procure new hardware.
  • Participate in audits and safety reviews associated with test operations.
  • Explore opportunities for equipment & operational improvements.
  • Assist in the design and planning for new equipment and facilities to support Aerospace research testing.
  • Work with research team on scheduling and space allocation planning.
  • Assist with tracking equipment and facilities projects, including scheduling and budgeting.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline, with 3 years of experience, or Associate's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a relevant discipline with a minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical systems, operations, and maintenance.
  • Experience operating and maintaining large mechanical equipment (compressor, pumps, heaters, etc.) and industrial piping systems.
  • Experience/training in safety compliance and industrial codes (NFPA, OSHA, ASME, etc.).
  • Experience with process controls, PLCs, and instrumentation
  • Understanding of Process and Instrument Diagrams.
  • Experience reading technical documentation and drawings.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Ability to perform multiple, concurrent tasks.
  • U.S. Citizenship required
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY

Desired Characteristics:
  • Experience installing or overhauling large mechanical equipment and industrial piping systems
  • Experience with project planning including schedule, budget, and project controls
  • Experience interacting/maintaining building mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex mechanical problems.
  • Experience using CAD/Drafting programs (AutoCAD, VISIO, SolidWorks, etc.).
  • Understanding/experience with equipment electrical needs.
  • Ability to work across all disciplines, functions/levels as part of a team.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.


The base pay range for this position is $60,000 - $110,000 USD Annually. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary based on the plan. This posting is expected to close on April 16, 2024
