Overview

Summary:

Supervises the drilling crew, acts as first responder for well control, and leads the hands on operation of the rig including mud pumps.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties:

Equipment operation: Operates the drilling rig and the daily, hands on drilling of and integrity of the wellbore in accordance with the drilling program. Operates surface well control equipment. Operates the brake handle/joy stick and participates in tests/drills. Maintains understanding of torque and drag as well as other downhole conditions by monitoring drilling indicators and weight indicator.

Safety: Develops a well-trained, reliable and safety focused crew. Ensures the safe operation and frequent inspection drilling rig.

Crew oversight: Oversees rig movement, maintenance and safety. Coordinates with Toolpusher to ensure adequate supplies and equipment are kept in inventory and readily available to crew members.

Rig move: Participates in rig move on an alternating schedule with other crews.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises five employees in the Drilling Rigs. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees.

Qualifications

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of well monitoring computer based systems and be familiar with touch screen monitors.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) Well Control certification.

Other Skills and Abilities
Effective communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Ability to work very closely with others as a team.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Other Qualifications
Ability and willingness to work a hitch of 7 days on and 7 days off, working 12.5 hour shifts that can include days or nights as well as weekends and holidays.
Must be able to read technical and policy documents in English at a level that allows clear understanding of all safety and operational requirements of equipment and procedures and be able to verbalize those requirements and procedures to all assigned personnel.
Thorough understanding of rig positions and processes.
Knowledge of drilling as well as downhole conditions.
Current experience as a Driller on land rigs.
