Your role and responsibilities

You are interested in (industrial) Internet of Things systems, software architectures for the IoT, designing and prototyping data-driven IoT applications with a focus on data management and edge/cloud integration? You are looking forward to innovating in smart building or industrial automation systems, and design, integrate, and prototype sustainable, interoperable technology solutions, e.g., for smart building control or campus energy management? In your role as a research scientist, you work toward modern, reliable, and data-driven industrial IoT software architectures and technology solutions, including efficient data acquisition and management, software frameworks and platforms, integration with communication technologies, as well as technologies for easy-to-use and potentially ML/AI-based applications and services. • As part of diverse, multi-disciplinary teams, you design sustainable, scalable, and adaptable IoT systems and software architectures. • You build prototypes by applying IoT technologies and you showcase your work in demonstrators inside and outside of ABB. • You apply your knowledge to smart buildings or industrial automation, building on common software platforms & technologies. • You team up to innovate in data-driven IoT systems, including edge/cloud or cyber-physical systems, digital twin and machine learning technologies. • With your technical expertise, you initiate, guide, and contribute to applied research projects, and provide consultancy to product development teams. • You collaborate internationally with ABB divisions, customers, partners, startups, and renowned academic institutes. • You secure intellectual property by patent applications and publish scientific articles. • You have the chance to continuously develop your technical expertise and personal skills.

Qualifications for the role

• We value cross-cultural communication skills and creativity, initiative, and result orientation to drive your innovations toward new products and services. Proficient English skills are mandatory.
• Above average degree in computer science, automation engineering, or a related field, combined with either academic (PhD) or professional experience of at least 2 years.
• Experience with software architecture (design principles, sustainable software) and software engineering methodologies.
• Knowledge of data and system integration techniques (e.g., information modeling, data pipelines, machine learning), fog/edge/cloud platforms and IoT technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, MQTT, OPC UA); related IoT technologies (e.g., AR, VR) are a plus.
• Hands-on experience in software development (e.g., C++, C#, Java, Python) and related tools and processes (DevOps, git, agile)
• Domain knowledge in smart buildings and building automation (e.g., KNX or BACnet protocols, planning and engineering tools, automation functions) or another relevant ABB domain like industrial automation are a plus.
