Come and do the kind of engineering that made you want to be an engineer. Stretch your technical skills while building human understanding. Promote sustainability and create new materials. And, alongside world-leading scientists, technicians and technologists, shape projects that improve lives, and daily life, in the UK and far beyond.

Put simply, come and discover the impact you can make when you're equipped, encouraged and inspired to perform to your very best.

About us

The RAL Space Department has a large portfolio of programmes that covers a wide range of applications (Space Instruments, Space Physics, Earth Observation and Ground Support Calibration Equipment) and will provide the successful candidates with opportunities to provide technical leadership of a range of projects involving ground support, calibration and flight hardware at all stages of the space project lifecycle; from pre-project feasibility studies, through to flight operations.

The role and your duties

RAL Space has a vacancy for a Group Leader in its Thermal Engineering Group. The Group has 6 thermal engineers, all at post graduate level, and you will be required to lead these staff in undertaking activities that support the department's objectives. You will be responsible for defining the strategic direction of the group, including developing and maintaining ISO9001 processes. You will also provide the 'interface' between the Group and senior management.

The group provides thermal engineering support to projects in RAL Space, and you will be required to manage the resources levels through recruitment, staff development and assessing resource requests and allocations. In addition, you will be expected to seek out new work for the group through developing new contacts outside of RAL Space. As the Group leader, you will be required to provide excellent technical leadership to your team to help them achieve good technical solutions to engineering problems.

In addition to the management of the Group, you will be expected to work on projects requiring thermal system design. The work will involve developing thermal subsystem levels requirements during the early concept phase and then using these to develop compliant detailed thermal designs that can be realised. The work will require a detailed understand of the thermal environment of space and how equipment needs to be thermally managed during all stages of its life cycle.

Our Benefits

Our Benefits include a flexible working scheme (subject to business requirements), Defined benefit pension scheme, and 30 days annual leave allowance plus 10.5 bank holiday/privilege days and several other benefits.

Person specification:

The following criteria will be assessed at either shortlisting (S), interview (I), or both (S&I):

• Experience managing small teams, included the training and development of staff (S&I)
• Recognised (by external organisations such as ESA) expert in the field of spacecraft equipment thermal engineering (I)
• Experience of thermal system design for equipment used in space (S&I)
• Experience of using thermal analysis tools, such as ESATAN- TMS (S&I)
• Experience of preparing, planning and leading thermal test campaigns (S&I)
• Experience of thermal system design at cryogenic temperatures (S&I)
• Working knowledge of relevant space standards (e.g. ECSS) and ISO9001 quality standard
• Degree in engineering/physics or equivalent (S)
