Are you passionate about creating safer, more sustainable solutions? Schneider Electric is seeking a dynamic Research Scientist specializing in flame retardants to join our innovative team. Drive cutting-edge research and develop advanced materials that enhance safety and sustainability in energy management.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and test flame retardant materials, ensuring compliance with safety standards such as UL 94, RoHS, and REACh, and with NFPA codes and standards related to fire and safety.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate flame retardant solutions into various products, including electrical enclosures and battery modules.
  • Innovate and improve the sustainability profile of flame-retardant materials, contributing to our Green Premium™ product label.
  • Conduct rigorous material testing and analysis to meet stringent safety and environmental regulations.
  • Innovate in the field of engineering plastics for electrical applications, correlating plastic formulations and chemistry with performance impacts.
  • Stay ahead of emerging chemistries and additives, evaluating their potential benefits and integrating them into SE products.
  • Proactively monitor substance regulations that affect materials used in electrical applications, and develop new chemistries or alternatives to mitigate risks to our product portfolio.
  • Identify and establish partnerships with key stakeholders such as universities, labs, and startups to advance materials research for SE.
  • Support business units and other functions as needed, particularly in driving SE's sustainability mission in materials.
  • Generate innovative ideas to introduce more sustainable materials into our products.
  • Manage knowledge through the capture of competencies, transfer best practices, provide internal training, and coach new employees in the field of Physico-chemical formulation.

Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Polymer Science, Polymer Chemistry, Polymer Engineering, Materials Science, or Material Engineering with a minimum of 10 years of experience, or a PhD in Polymer Chemistry/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Material Science/Engineering with 5 years of experience.
  • Deep expertise in thermoplastic materials and a good understanding of thermoset and elastomeric materials.
  • Strong foundation in polymer chemistry; familiarity with the chemistry of flame retardancy is advantageous.
  • Proficient in structure-property analysis and capable of creating formulations using additives and fillers to achieve desired functionalities and performance.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with polymers such as polyamides, polycarbonates, and polyolefins.
  • Proven experience in the field of substance regulation.
  • Demonstrated ability to innovate through collaborations with universities and suppliers.
  • Excellent teamwork skills, capable of working with cross-regional teams to deliver impactful results.
  • Strong leadership skills to drive technical groups and achieve desired outcomes.
  • Solid understanding of sustainability considerations in material design.
  • Published research in a peer-reviewed publication or other reputable scientific outlet is a plus.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical and technical skills, with experience in material testing and characterization (FTIR, SEM, TEM, Flammability, TGA and DSC).
