Master Thesis

Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!

For our Institute of Networked Energy Systemsin Stuttgart we are looking for

Student Computer Science, Energy Engineering or similar (f/m/x)

Further development of an electric vehicle charging infrastructure ontology

What to expect:

The Institute for Networked Energy Systems employs around 185 people at its sites in Oldenburg and Stuttgart. With its departments of Urban and Residential Technologies, Energy Systems Technology and Energy Systems Analysis, it is dedicated to system-technical and system-analytical issues concerning the intelligent and efficient coupling of the electricity, heat, industry and transport sectors.

The Energy Systems Analysis department pursues the goal of enabling the optimal design of energy systems with high shares of renewable energies by providing detailed orientation knowledge. The Energy Systems Modelling group is dedicated to the analysis of energy systems transformation pathways in high spatial and temporal resolution, the further methodological development of energy systems models and the identification and open provision of data for these models. In this context, the quality of soundness of data is of high importance to ensure the consistency and interoperability of our models. To aid the process of integrating heterogeneous data sources we develop suites of domain specific ontologies for energy system relevant sectors. One of these ontologies intends to cover terminology relevant to the exploration and operation of Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) data. The development of this ontology is driven by a collection of application scenarios.

Your contribution consists of the implementation of the first application scenarios associated to charging infrastructure registries and the proposal of new scenarios of interest for science and industry, specifically you will perform the following tasks:
  • Getting familiar with git based open source ontology development.
  • Research and collect important terminology associated with industry standards and protocols like the IEC 62196, the OCPP and the OCPI.
  • Implement ontology axioms in the web ontology language (OWL).
  • Participate in the modelling discussion process during regular developer meetings.
  • Perform extensive documentation of the collecting process with emphasis on potential data licensing risks.

What we expect from you:

  • Currently registered student in the field of computer science, engineering or a comparable discipline with preferable relation to transport, energy and/or semantic web technologies
  • Scripting and programming skills with one or more of the following languages: java, python, shell
  • Experience following software development workflows using issue boards (i.e. GitHub)
  • Basic technical knowledge of distribution grids, electric vehicles and their charging infrastructure
  • Ability to work independently and willingness to speak up when finding challenges
  • Excellent English competence, must be able to understand and explain technical documents

  • Familiarity with semantic web stack would be an advantage (for example: RDF, SPARQL, OWL and Protégé)

What we offer:

DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
