Your role and responsibilities

Leads the integration of the group-wide sustainability strategy into the business strategy within their assigned area of responsibility (Indigenous Relations, Canada). Leads business-specific sustainability programs, as agreed. The incumbent will have a deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, values, and business practices, along with prior experience in a leadership role focused on Indigenous relations. Working closely with senior management of ABB Inc. (Canada), the incumbent will challenge and inspire ABB Inc to develop and lead proactive and constructive relationship-building and engagement strategies that result in meaningful relationships and successful, ongoing engagement with Indigenous communities, organizations and businesses where ABB Inc. conducts its operations. • Integrate Indigenous Relations strategy: Lead the integration of the Indigenous Relations strategy into the overall business strategy to ensure it aligns with the company's goals. • Set and monitor objectives, targets, and KPIs: Ensure that the Indigenous Relations objectives, targets, and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are clearly defined and allocated to relevant business levels, with regular follow-up mechanisms in place. • Report on sustainability performance: Regularly report on the sustainability performance and progress related to the implementation of group-level sustainability objectives and KPIs. • Provide sustainability expertise: Assist the organization in understanding obligations, liabilities, and stakeholder expectations when working with Indigenous communities, businesses, organizations, or peoples. • Collaborate on sustainability topics: Work with other local division designates to establish priorities and initiatives that support the implementation of sustainability programs specific to the business. • Ensure alignment and effectiveness: Collaborate with all related internal stakeholders to ensure the alignment, efficiency, and effectiveness of the Indigenous Relations strategy implementation. • Define roles and responsibilities: Help the organization establish clear roles and responsibilities for successfully integrating the Indigenous Relations strategy into the business strategy, focusing on competence and capacity. • Work with business management: Collaborate closely with the business management team to identify, define, and follow up on the sustainability strategy and business plans, supporting their implementation. • Engage with external Indigenous stakeholders: Work with external Indigenous stakeholders, rightsholders, businesses, organizations, and peoples to identify mutually beneficial opportunities for collaboration that align with the Indigenous Relations strategy, sustainability strategy, and business plans. • Support Indigenous community and education institutions: Engage and support Indigenous communities and educational institutions to help close the gaps Indigenous people face in education and the labor market. • Optimize global information use: Ensure the optimized delivery and use of global information (e.g., regulatory, customer, competitor, business, market) in the business decision-making process to achieve optimal outcomes. • Drive behavioral change: Promote and facilitate behavioral change to continuously improve sustainability performance and share best practices across the organization. The role involves a comprehensive focus on regulations and compliance, particularly in Indigenous consultation and engagement. It encompasses administration and consulting, planning and organizing, and strategic thinking, such as employing two-eyed ways of seeing. The position requires a strong orientation towards market trends and specialist sustainability knowledge, especially in corporate Indigenous relations. It emphasizes ESG ratings with Indigenous-informed features and sustainability reporting, particularly using Canadian Indigenous frameworks like CCIB PAR. The role also includes promoting a circular economy and responsible sourcing, with experience in sourcing Indigenous suppliers. Employee engagement is crucial, with a focus on attracting, recruiting, and retaining Indigenous employees. Community engagement is essential, requiring extensive experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations. The role also covers human rights, diversity, and inclusion, specifically for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples. Change management is a key aspect, particularly through developing and implementing educational materials, and cultural transformation, specifically in creating Indigenous inclusive spaces.

Qualifications for the role

  • 15+ years of experience in Indigenous Relations in a corporate setting.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, Indigenous Studies, or a related field.
  • Lived or substantial experience promoting and understanding Indigenous perspectives.
  • In-depth knowledge of the shared history of Indigenous people in Canada.
  • Demonstrated experience in stakeholder relations and proven relationship building.
  • Strong public speaking skills for diverse audiences.
  • Outcomes-based mindset with experience building external partnerships.
  • High level of discretion, judgment, and ability to handle complex issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to travel throughout Canada and North America (up to 25%).
