GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a Drilling Technician located in Cheyenne, Wyoming. As a Drilling Technician, you will be responsible for performing various duties under supervision to provide a safe, high quality, and efficient transportation system. Assist drillers in operating a drill rig safely, efficiently for geological/geotechnical investigations in support of engineering division requirements to design highways. Responsible for helping to obtain field samples, driving a water truck, and supporting equipment.

Cheyenne is a steadily growing community along the Front Range but still true to the history of the Old West. The city offers nearby mountain biking, skiing, hiking, fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities. Cheyenne also is home to the "Daddy of 'em All" - Cheyenne Frontier Days - held every last week of July. Wyoming is one of only nine states with no state income tax.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

  • Assists the driller in completing drill holes to obtain geotechnical information for highway design
  • This position requires extensive travel (up to 90%) via auto, truck, airplane, etc.
  • Assists in gathering drilling and testing supplies needed for the week
  • Operates and helps maintain water truck and support equipment in a safe manner
  • Water truck duties include safely moving trucks to drilling locations on various terrain and weather conditions
  • Duties include wash, service, lubricate as needed, some repairs of equipment and augers, bits, A.W. rods, and testing equipment
  • Operates a backhoe without the supervision of a driller to complete gravel pit investigations
  • Operates an auger drill in auger mode with the supervision of a driller
  • Drives support vehicles to and from projects to load and transport materials to job sites
  • Communicates with geologists about field tests to be taken to ensure that the proper testing equipment is prepared
  • Schedules service and maintenance for equipment with the supervisor
  • Assists in traffic control, including setting signs, cones, etc., and flagging to help ensure a safe work zone
  • Responsible for reporting time and equipment hours or miles as part of overall project cost monitoring

Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

Preference will be given to applicants with a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Skill in oral communication.

Associate's Degree

Experience:
0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Drilling) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Drilling Assistant

Education & Experience Substitution:
2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Drilling) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Drilling Assistant
