GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) seeks a Driller in Cheyenne, Wyoming. As a Driller, you will be responsible for performing various duties, under limited supervision, to provide a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system. Operate drill rig safely, and efficiently for geological/geotechnical investigations to support engineering division requirements to design highways. Lead the work activities of the drill team. Responsible for obtaining field samples, running all three drill rigs, and knowing the operation of drill rigs and support equipment. With minimal supervision and direction. Responsible for teaching the operation of equipment, testing, and maintaining tools and equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Accountable for knowing how to safely drill and test various soils and rocks to obtain samples for the Geologists to design highways
  • Directs the work of drill helpers and flaggers
  • This position requires extensive travel (up to 90%) via auto, truck, airplane, etc.
  • Gathers supplies needed for the week
  • Communicates with WYDOT Personnel, geologists, Principal geologists, Drill supervisors, other agencies, and the private sector
  • Works in all types of weather conditions and rugged terrain, works around other heavy equipment, and on busy highways under live traffic conditions
  • Operates and maintains drill trucks or transport with drills in a safe manner
  • Drill truck or transport duties include safely moving drill trucks or transporting them to drilling locations on various terrain and weather conditions
  • Maintains drill, water truck and or transport, and trailer; duties include washing, servicing, greasing as needed, and repairing equipment and augers, bits, A.W. rods, and testing equipment
  • Schedules service and maintenance for equipment with a supervisor
  • Assists in traffic control, including setting signs, cones, etc., and flagging to help ensure a safe work zone
  • Responsible for reporting time and equipment hours or miles as part of overall project cost monitoring

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Skill in oral communication
  • Skill in interpersonal relations
  • Ability to weld
  • Knowledge of drilling with augers
  • Knowledge of drill equipment and ability to troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical problems
  • Ability to accept responsibility, make decisions, and learn from superiors
  • Knowledge of different drilling techniques - air rotary, mud rotary, and wireline coring
  • Ability to lift 100 pounds

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Construction)

Experience:
0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Drilling) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Drilling Technician

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:
High School Diploma, PLUS 3-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Drilling) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Drilling Technician
