THE POSITION
The Pasadena Water & Power Department is seeking an Instrument Mechanic to become a valued member of a three-person Instrument Section that is engaged in the installation, repair, testing and calibration of hydraulic, mechanical, electric, electronic, and pneumatic instrumentation equipment used to control, analyze, measure and record the equipment and processes at the City's Broadway/Glenarm generation station.

The ideal candidate possesses a broad and thorough spectrum of journey level experience installing, repairing, maintaining, and calibrating instrumentation at an industry scale generation facility.

Essential Functions

The major responsibilities of this position are listed below. For more detailed information, please review the

  1. Makes visual inspections of power plant pneumatic, electronic, hydraulic automatic controls and indicating and recording instruments to determine operating conditions and perform preventative maintenance; services and makes running adjustments and minor repairs; and removes instruments and controls and makes major shop repairs.
  2. Tests, calibrates, adjusts and repairs pneumatic, electronic, hydraulic, and mechanical precision temperature, pressure and flow measuring devices; replaces worn and fabricates new parts as needed.
  3. Troubleshoot, install, adjust, repair, test, configure and calibrate various types of valves, microprocessors, electronic and pneumatic instrumentation and control equipment including Allen Bradley, Wonderware, Ovation, control systems; and Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS) associated with the department's power production facilities to assure reliable, efficient, environmentally sound and safe plant operation.
  4. Uses test instruments such as electronic meters, mercury manometers, pneumatic loaders, pressure gauges and indicators and other analyzing and electrical testing equipment and meters.
  5. Assists engineering personnel in conducting equipment efficiency tests of various pieces of equipment, making revisions and improvements of instrumentation system.
  6. Request and receive Lockout/Tagout clearances on equipment; keeps log of work done; and maintains, revises, and prepares system layout prints and diagrams.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Four years of experience in the repair and maintenance of mechanic equipment and machinery of which two years have been related to power plant or other process plant instrument repair as a journey level Instrument Mechanic.
SELECTION PROCESS
The selection process may consist of a training and experience evaluation, subject matter expert review, written test, performance evaluation and/or department-level interview.

Probationary work period for this position is one year.

Special Requirements

Effective January 1, 2013, new members to CalPERS or an agency with CALPERS' reciprocity or who have more than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPER (or reciprocal) agency will be subject to the provisions of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and will receive the 2% @ 62 benefit formula.

Employees who are current members of CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS' reciprocity, or who have less than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency and employment with the City will be enrolled in the 2.5% @ 55 benefit formula.
