POSITION SUMMARY:
Under general supervision performs work of moderate difficulty in general plumbing and pipe fitting duties; performs related work as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Determines defects and maintains heating, water irrigation and drainage systems
- Inspects systems to ascertain cause of malfunction
- Repairs or replaces plumbing fixtures (sinks, commodes, etc.)
- Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers, mending or replacing burst pipes and opening clogged drains
- Measures, cuts, threads, glues, solders and installs pipe and pipe fittings;
- Read and interpret designs and drawings indicating plumbing installation, e.g., water drainage, heating systems, etc.;
- Lays drainage tile and installs or repairs drainage system;
- Replaces, relocates and maintains pipes, steam, water, air or chemical lines
- Maintains large valves on such lines;
- Inspects piping system to ascertain causes of malfunctions
- Repairs or replaces defective lines using hand tools, pipe cutter, acetylene torch, etc.;
- Tests repaired or newly installed system for leaks, malfunctions, etc.;
- May set, repair and maintain certain types of boilers or heating apparatus;
- Assists in layout and design of new or renovation projects to ensure compliance with present plumbing codes;
- Determines parts and supplies needed for replacement or repair projects;
- May provide work direction to assigned workers of lower classification;
- Completes work orders and other forms showing time spent and materials used;
- May use welder to weld piping and miscellaneous brackets related to plumbing jobs.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
- Knowledge of the standards, practices, methods, processes, materials, machines and tools of plumbing and pipe fitting
- Knowledge of plumbing codes.
Skill in:
- Performing plumbing and pipe fitting duties
Ability to:
- Troubleshoot plumbing/steamfitting problems.
- Interpret and follow oral and written instructions and drawings
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from high school or General Educational Development (GED) Tests equivalency and possession of a journeyman's card in the plumbing trade or possession of a City of Toledo Journeyman Plumber's License.
- Position assignment at the Division of Facility and Fleet Operations requires graduation from high school or General Educational Development (GED) Tests equivalency and at least one (1) of the following:
- Successful completion of a four-year or five-year apprenticeship school recognized by the State of Ohio in the plumbing trade, OR
- Three (3) years of verifiable plumbing experience with a company that services both residential and/or light commercial buildings.
