We are currently hiring for the following internships for Summer 2025:

  • Mining Engineering
  • Metallurgical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering

Learning Objectives

Students will work with leaders and mentors as they contribute to current projects, generate new ideas and explore the career options available in the mining industry. At the end of the internship, students will have a clear understanding of the mine engineering profession as it relates to the mining and milling industry in general and Doe Run in particular. Students will come away with solid experience in the field, especially in the areas of scaling processes, blasting processes, ground support, underground support, haulage, and surveying.

Work Plan

  • Job shadowing with an experienced mining engineer learning how our tech service engineers apply engineering principles to real world situations.
  • Assignment of individual project in which results will be presented by intern to the executive and leadership team
  • Learning how we handle our scaling processes through hands on job training and working with our experienced miners hand scaling.
  • Learning the techniques of how we blast, our blasting patterns and the different types of blasting agents that we use and their effects.
  • Working with an experienced roof bolter operator to gain knowledge of ground support.
  • Working with an underground utility crew including some shaft bottom time learning about ventilation, mine power, and drainage applications.
  • At least one day will be spent riding with haul truck operators as experience for future equipment evaluation tasks.
  • At least one day will be spent helping a survey crew, gaining knowledge of this critical function in order to keep mine maps up to date and the mines moving in the proper direction.
  • Order of assignments will depend on operational needs
  • Assignments may vary from this plan depending on business needs at the time.

Guidelines for Academic Background

  • Related Major(other engineering or technical degree paths related to underground mining may be accepted)
  • At least 40 hours coursework completed towards Bachelor's degree with at least 12 hours required coursework in chosen major
  • Must be able to commute to the Viburnum location on a daily basis
  • Must be available for the entire duration of the Summer Internship (end of May through full first week of August)
  • Grade Point Average at least 2.7 (on 4 point scale)
  • No work experience in mining field required
  • Very strong verbal and written communication skills
  • A strong work ethic is required
