Summary

The Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences (GMES) at Michigan Technological University is seeking an interdisciplinary scholar to develop a vibrant, externally funded research program in the broad area of geological engineering for geohydrology. Specific research areas of interest may include but are not limited to groundwater and contaminant hydrology, groundwater engineering, hydrodynamics modeling, surface or subsurface remediation, and geohazards.

Successful candidates will demonstrate an interest in developing strong collaborative research and educational programs within GMES and with other departments and centers, such as the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering, the Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC), Michigan Tech Transportation Institute (MTTI), the Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences Institute (EPSSI), and Institute of Computing and Cybersystems (ICC), as well as industry partners. Successful candidates will be committed to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in geological and mining engineering and have experience with engineering design in their area of expertise.

Responsibilities

Teach required and technical elective undergraduate and graduate courses for the geological engineering program. Develop and implement course syllabi, assignments, and examinations.

Develop and sustain a vigorous externally funded research program in geohydrology and groundwater engineering including but not limited to groundwater and contaminant hydrology, groundwater engineering, hydrodynamics modeling, surface or subsurface remediation, and geohazards.

Publish research in peer-reviewed journals.

Mentor graduate and undergraduate students in their academic and research endeavors.

Contribute to the continuity and accreditation of the geological engineering program.

Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and activities.

Participate in service at the departmental, college, and university levels, as well as externally.

Contribute to initiatives aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion within the department and university.

Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work.

Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

A bachelor's degree in geological engineering, or a closely related engineering or geoscience field, and a PhD in geological engineering, hydrological engineering, civil engineering, environmental engineering, or a closely related engineering field.

Required Experience

Experience in academic research related to geohydrology or groundwater engineering.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

Previous experience in securing external research funding.
Professional licensure in geological engineering or a related field.
Demonstrated ability to teach at the university level.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

Solid understanding of geological engineering concepts and practices.
Knowledge in the following research areas within geological engineering- geohydrology or groundwater engineering.
Ability to conduct independent research and publish findings.
Effective communication and teaching skills.
Ability to teach courses in Geohydrology and Groundwater Engineering.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

Ability to develop robust, externally funded research programs.
Establish and maintain connections with alumni and industry professionals.
Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration.
Expertise in the application of remote sensing, artificial intelligence, or machine learning in geohydrology and groundwater engineering.
Expertise in geohazards assessment or mitigation.
Expertise in areas of groundwater and contaminant hydrology, hydrodynamics modeling, and surface or subsurface remediation.
Demonstrated success in, or potential future contributions to, working with persons from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging, and fostering a fair, objective, welcoming place to work for persons with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints.

Language, Mathematics and/or Reasoning Skills

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
