Position Purpose
Responsible for on-site leadership of maintenance and repair services for the HVAC Department; supports the maintenance of all HVAC systems in a condition of operating excellence so that facilities may be fully used at all times.

Essential Functions
  • Maintains a commitment to the district motto, mission, vision, and values; models district expectations through personal leadership and example; and actively supports the efforts of others to achieve district goals.
  • Promotes an environment of cultural competency and responsiveness for students, parents, staff and stakeholders.
Facilities Maintenance and Repair
  • Assigns work to HVAC personnel and oversees completion. Initiates contract repair when work cannot be performed by district staff.
  • Assigns priority to HVAC work orders and processes them. Works cooperatively with principals and facilities managers to schedule and complete repairs.
  • Estimates cost of repair projects including labor, materials, and other related costs.
  • Instructs and trains staff in proper equipment operation.
Inspection
  • Inspects all district HVAC equipment and initiates repairs as needed.
  • Conducts on-site inspection of completed repair projects.
  • Monitors and inspects contract work.
  • Provides training and orientation to all HVAC workers in safety procedures and proper use of tools and equipment.
Inventory and Equipment
  • Prepares, implements, and maintains "Life Cycle Analyses" of equipment, preventive maintenance schedules for tools and equipment. Ensures that maintenance is completed and equipment is in safe operating condition. Recommends replacement of existing equipment when necessary.
  • Conducts regular inventory of physical equipment and supplies and maintains accurate records. Orders tools, equipment, and supplies as needed.
Other
  • Maintains primary license for department as required by code.
  • Develops both short and long range goals for the department.
  • Responds to after-hours emergency calls as needed.
  • Meets with engineers, architects and contractors regarding projects.
  • Assists in the preparation of department budget.
  • Assists in recruiting, screening, selection, training, and evaluation of HVAC employees.
  • Maintains accurate information for payroll reporting (timecards, tardiness, and absenteeism).
Safety
  • Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensures equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing; operates tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates staff, and makes recommendations relative to assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal.

  • Knowledge of HVAC repairs, maintenance, and installation techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, and written reference material.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve problems.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools.
  • Ability to use software to create spreadsheets, databases, and do word processing.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written forms.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Travel Requirements
  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • Tools/Equipment Used: Electrical measuring and testing equipment; welding equipment; hand tools; power tools; hoist; light truck or van
  • Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions
  • Motion: Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving
  • Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis
  • Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; may work on rooftops; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; may work alone; may work irregular and prolonged hours; frequent districtwide travel
  • Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress
Required Qualifications
  • Education: Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency required;
  • Associate's degree from accredited college or university preferred.

  • Certification/License:
    • Valid State of Texas Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractor's license, Class A with endorsements of Environmental Air conditioning and Commercial Refrigeration/process cooling and heating required;
    • Valid Texas driver's license required;
    • Insurable by the District's insurance carrier required
  • Experience: 5-7 years HVAC related experience required
