Thesis Work - Simulating collisions between cast iron components

At ABB, we are dedicated to addressing global challenges. Our core values: care, courage, curiosity, and collaboration - combined with a focus on diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities - are key drivers in our aim to empower everyone to create sustainable solutions. That's our story. Make it your story.

R&D Team Lead

Your role and responsibilities

At ABB, you can be sure you are helping to create a better world. Why not take the chance to do this while working in one of the most fascinating technology areas in modern industry - Robotics! ABB Robotics is a leading supplier of industrial robots and robot software, in addition to its equipment and complete application solutions. We're found in 53 countries and have installed more than 500,000 robots, supported by the broadest service network and offering in the industry. Now we are offering an exciting master thesis within Mechanical Analysis R&D. You can be a part of our team responsible for simulation, optimization and calculations on the robots. To achieve a proper balance between performance, strength, quality, safety and cost, we continuously develop new types of manipulators consisting of motors, gears and arms. When developing structural arms one challenge is to ensure that they can withstand operational loads, including unexpected loads, safely. Many ABB robots can rotate its arms about six rotational axis which enables complex motions. The purpose of this thesis project is to develop a method to analyze the collision event between cast iron components. This requires explicit simulation models with accurate material models. The methodology will then be used to develop new designs for the mechanical stop. Details: • January-June 2025 • 30 ECTS/högskolepoäng(hp) • One student • Most time on site in Västerås Your responsibilities: • Literature study on cast iron collision behavior. • Specify model criteria based on the literature. • Build simulation model/models in SimCenter to investigate the collision. • Perform simulations and evaluate the result accuracy. • Use the result to suggest designs for the impact zones. • Participate in the setup of a physical robot collision test, if needed. • Living ABB's core values of safety and integrity, which means taking responsibility for your own actions while caring for your colleagues and the business.

Qualifications for the role

  • Engineering student in Mechanical engineering, Technical physics, Aeronautical or program with similar profile, with orientation towards Computational mechanics and/or materials.
  • Basic knowledge in Solid mechanics and Finite Element Method.
  • You are self-driven, structured and analytical
  • Fluent English in speaking and writing, English is the corporate language and used for all documentation
