Join our team as a Public Works Crew Leader and make a lasting impact in our community! We are seeking a skilled and dedicated individual to lead and supervise a team responsible for maintaining and improving our city's infrastructure.

Examples of Duties

Under general supervision, performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the operation of a variety of equipment and heavy equipment used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the City Public Water System (PWS).

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Performs all duties associated with wastewater collection, including installing, connecting, relocating, adjusting, testing, maintaining, televising, repairing, and replacing wastewater mains, pumps, and other equipment; cutting and fitting pipes; complies with department policies and procedures.
  • Operates equipment, tools, and motor vehicles such as trucks, loaders, backhoes, and other similar maintenance or construction equipment to conform with applicable regulatory standards and City standards.
  • Maintains heavy equipment by conducting daily safety inspections of equipment, cleans and performs routine maintenance work on trucks and equipment; identifies and reports mechanical problems requiring additional repair.
  • Hauls materials, and transports vehicles and equipment to job sites using various trucks.
  • Loads and unloads materials using power equipment.
  • Safely operates equipment and tools used at work sites as required; places traffic control flags, signs, and cones to direct traffic around work sites, and operates and maintains hand and power tools.
  • Performs routine maintenance and repair on lift stations, manholes, cleanouts, pumps, motors, vehicles, equipment, and tools; ensures quality control and restoration.
  • Responds tactfully to questions and comments from the public and delegates to appropriate staff.
  • On-call for emergency situations and assist with special events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: No direct supervision exercised; may exercise occasional operational and functional supervision for specified activities in the absence of the crew leader.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Posses a valid driver license.
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years' experience in utility operations.
  • Three (3) years' experience in utility operations preferred.
  • Experience operating heavy motorized equipment.
Special Requirements:
  • Possess a Class A CDL within one (1) year of hire.
  • Possess a TCEQ Class II Wastewater Collection License within one (1) year of employment.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:
  • Operate a motor vehicle safely.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk long distances, kneel, crouch, stoop, and squat.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Exposure to cold, heat, construction, roadway, and other outdoor hazards.

Life Insurance
Basic group life insurance protection is provided to eligible full-time employees in the amount of two times the annual salary as recorded at the beginning of each year.

Voluntary products are also available to full-time employees and include supplemental life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, cancer insurance, and critical care.

Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS)
All employees appointed to positions designated to work 1,000 hours or more per year must participate in the Texas Municipal Retirement System. TMRS is a qualified tax deferred retirement plan under Section 401 of the IRS. Seven percent of gross earnings are deducted each payroll as a pre-tax deduction and deposited into the member account. When an employee becomes vested and retires, the city provides 2-to-1 matching contributions.
