The North Tonawanda Cogen facility, located in North Tonawanda, NY, is a 55-MW combined-cycle plant. It features one GE Frame 6 gas turbine generator, one HRSG (Heat Recovery Steam Generator), and one GE steam turbine generator, all supported by a diverse array of essential auxiliary equipment. This facility not only ensures efficient and reliable power generation but also serves as a vital source of electricity for the surrounding area, contributing to the region's energy needs.

Opportunity Summary

The Power Plant Technician Trainee supports on-shift Operations and Maintenance personnel and may occasionally serve as an Auxiliary Operator or Maintenance helper for mechanical, electrical, or controls technicians, depending on plant needs.

Primary Duties

  • Knowledgeable and adheres to all safety procedures including lock-out/tag-out and the use of personal protective equipment
  • Operates equipment safely and with the intent to minimize risk to personnel and equipment
  • Operates/maintains project equipment at maximum operating efficiency
  • Provides assistance with project clean-up and housekeeping activities as required
  • Supports performance of necessary maintenance activities
  • Writes and maintains equipment logs, operational logs, and other reports as required in a clear professional manner. Is able to read, understand and respond to written instructions and logbook notations
  • Participates in daily preventative and corrective maintenance activities in a safe, effective, and timely manner
  • Understands and follows regulatory requirements
  • Establishes good working relations with teammates, team leaders, project technical experts, and engineers
  • Operates station vehicles such as forklifts, trucks, overhead cranes, and mobile cranes
  • Demonstrates ability to use project drawings, blueprints, and manuals
  • Demonstrates knowledge of equipment layout and project systems
  • Reports upset conditions or other anomalies in project status to the Shift Supervisor
  • Make entries in the Operating Log
  • Performs emergency operations to maintain electric service and safeguard station equipment
  • Provides information to the Control Room Operator to effect changes in project conditions and chemistry
  • Performs routine equipment rounds and inspections in compliance with established operating procedures
  • Performs other duties as required

Working Relationships

The Power Plant Technician Trainee reports to the Shift Supervisor. The Power Plant Technician Trainee may also give information to Maintenance personnel on matters pertaining to project operations.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility. Working conditions include outside in cold and hot weather for periods of time.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

This position requires working twelve hour rotating shifts. Position may require extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

The hourly rate of pay will be $25.00.

Job Qualifications

  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school
  • Associate degree in a technical field desirable
  • Must successfully complete the Power Plant Technician Trainee qualification card
  • Must successfully complete a Mechanical Aptitude test and a Basic Mathematical test
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Valid driver's license required
