This research position is to work on the EPSRC-funded NEURONE project aiming to design, develop and produce suitable high-temperature, radiation-resistant nano-structured steels capable of being employed in the UK's prototype STEP fusion reactor.

A range of candidate alloys are currently being designed, produced and mechanically tested by partners within this £12.5M project, led by UKAEA. The post holder in Oxford will play a key role in characterising selected steels and other exotic alloys using atom probe tomography, making use of the unique NuMAP LEAP5000XR instrument at Oxford, dedicated to the characterisation of irradiated materials. They will lead on examining implanted and neutron irradiated samples, producing in-depth APT analysis to help ascertain steel stability under fusion-like conditions. This will focus in particular on the stability of any MX precipitates present, along with visual and statistical analysis of key elements including Mn, Si and B in these steels.

The post is initially available until 31 March 2026, but with expectation of extension for up to 2 further years subject to approval.

The successful applicant will have a PhD (or be near completion) with relevant experience in atom probe tomography and focussed-ion beam techniques. This includes the preparation of irradiated specimens using FIB-based 'lift-out' techniques, along with utilising EDX and TKD capabilities. They will have the ability to manage their own academic research and have excellent communication skills, including the ability to effectively liaise with other project partners, presenting research results and drafting data for wider publication.

It would be desirable to have some experience in working with irradiated materials, and knowledge of steels utilised in nuclear (fission and/or fusion) environments.

All applications must be made online using the Oxford University E-Recruitment system, no later than 12 noon on 2 December 2024. You will be required to upload a CV and a Supporting Statement as part of your application. Please do not attach any manuscripts, papers, transcripts, mark sheets or certificates as these will not be considered as part of your application.

Interviews are scheduled to take place at the Department of Materials week commencing 9 December 2024, and you must be available on this date, either by Teams, Zoom or in person. Please note in normal circumstances only interview travel expenses within the UK will be reimbursed.
