Location: Providence, RI 02912

The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Facility is a critical core research center in the Department of Chemistry.

The NMR Supervisor will have primary responsibility for the optimal maintenance and operation of the NMR spectrometers and helium recovery system located in the Geo-Chem Building.

Major Responsibilities:
  1. Coordinates all activities in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) facility, including nitrogen and helium fills, billing, and maintenance of NMR instruments.
  2. Ensure optimal maintenance and operation of the NMR spectrometers and helium recovery system in the Department of Chemistry NMR facility located in the GeoChem building.
  3. Train, supervise and support facility users (students and researchers) with and provide technical assistance in experimental design, and data analysis.
  4. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  5. Plans, coordinates, and conducts scientific research requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard scientific techniques related to NMR.
  6. Directs the collection and supports the interpretation of data; prepares statistical and narrative reports and/or graphs, as appropriate to the specific position; prepares manuscripts for publication; presents research results to scientific conferences and other groups.

Qualifications:
  • M.S. in a research area that utilizes NMR spectroscopy with 3-5 years of related experience in a research environment.
  • Preferred: Ph.D. in a research area that utilizes NMR spectroscopy.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining Bruker NMR spectrometers, consoles and probes.
  • Experience with common NMR software used for data collection and analysis.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential to effectively interact with and support the facility's diverse and multidisciplinary user base.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
