Job purpose: To conduct and supervise mechanical operations to the highest possible standard of quality, efficiency and with minimal wastage. To ensure a provision of a safe working environment for all colleagues. This position is based in the South East of the UK - West Sussex, East Sussex, Kent and Surrey.
Key Responsibilities
- Be responsible for the supervision of the day to day workload of site team activities designated by the project Engineer. Site based activities including tooling, paperwork, Site contact, time management and staffing.
- Report lateness & sick reporting to the Project Engineer and have regular talks to ensure that all engineer issues are heard and are addressed.
- Lead on inductions, daily briefs and tool box talks to Site teams.
- Ensure all relevant Permit to works on Site are issued and managed.
- Provide the link between project Engineers & planning to ensure relevant Site teams are aware of their workload under the supervisors control, offering advice on vehicle allocation, tooling plant & equipment, working away from home and all other matters with respect of Site activities.
- Provide First line guidance to Site-specific health and safety issues and compliance including any training requirements.
- Lead Site based activities, to include client liaising, updating the Project engineer on daily progress and informing of any Site issues that arise.
- Be the Site leader on Projects allocated to, with responsibility for all Site based activities while the Project engineer is not present.
- Work with the Project Manager with design input as required, this may include Site surveys and design meetings with Technical Department and/or Clients.
Health, Safety and Environment
- Implement the Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Policy and procedures in all operations and activities under their control, focusing on excellence in all work areas utilising best practices to achieve the company's goals.
- Ensure that detailed Risk Assessments, method statements and Safe Systems of Work are available, communicated, understood and implemented with all relevant Site Engineers/Contractors/Visitors.
- Provide instruction, guidance and support and motivation to their respective teams.
- Undertake regular inspections of the workplace under your control to monitor the integrity of the Health and Safety procedures and to instil the virtues of behavioural culture change.
- Report and record (on the appropriate company documentation) any accidents / incidents or near misses that occur during the activities under your control.
- Ensure that the policy standards and working procedures are fully understood by all employees (including subcontractors) under your control.
- Ensure that adequate measures are undertaken to ensure the safety and protection of the environment.
- Set personal high standards as examples to teams and ensure good personal knowledge of operating systems.
HR
- Deputise for Project engineer where required on Site.
- Ensure competent and trained personnel are carrying out activities on Site.
- Work with other members of the team to ensure holiday periods are covered.
- Work to ECS procedures and assist in appraisals as required.
Financial
- Identify any areas of the Project that could have been improved and by what means to promote use of best practices across the business.
- Ensure that manpower, tools/equipment and vehicles are utilised fully for maximum efficiency to assist Project Engineers get the best possible project performances.
Other responsibilities

- Comply with company Health and Safety policies, procedures and codes of practice

Competence profile
Essential
- Specific skill based qualification to level 3 or above, OR, have 5 years field based experience within a specific skill based role.
- SMSTS (CITB).
- CSCS Supervisors card.
- Experience with working on Mechanical assets and rotating machinery
- Experience of supervising people and/or site-based activities
Desirable
- Ideally an NVQ or equivalence in the core role
- Have additional field based skill qualifications such as PASMA or MEWP training.
- Crane operations training (either Slingers Signaller or Lift supervisor to CPCS standard).
- Confined Space Trained.
- Level 3 Leadership Training (or working towards).
- Experience working with water control assets on rivers and waterways.
- Installation of Penstocks, Flap Valves, winches.
- Knowledge of working on tidal waterways, and the management of the risks associated.
- The ability to produce hand drawn sketches of assets after inspections, and detailed condition reports on said assets.
