JOB SUMMARY:
Jefferson County is hiring Plumbing, Gas, and Mechanical Inspectors to conduct inspections of plumbing, gas, and mechanical installations. Inspectors collaborate with contractors, engineers, plumbers, gas fitters, and HVAC technicians to ensure compliance with established codes. They review plans, schedule multiple inspections for efficiency, and maintain accurate inspection records. This role requires independent judgment, with incumbents working both in the office and in the field.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:

Driver's license.

Must possess 2 of the 3 certifications (Journeyman or Master's level) listed below:
  • Plumber certification from the State of Alabama Plumbers & Gas Fitters Examining Board.
  • Gas Fitter certification from the State of Alabama Plumbers & Gas Fitters Examining Board.
  • Alabama Heating & Air Conditioning Contractors Certification.
  • Experience reading plumbing, gas, and mechanical plans.
  • Experience sizing/installing plumbing systems.
  • Experience sizing/installing gas piping systems.
  • Experience sizing/installing gas venting systems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Merit System agencies. These qualifications may be considered by a hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.

Possess all 3 (Journeyman or Master) Certifications:
  • Plumber certification from Alabama Plumbers & Gas Fitters Examining Board.
  • Gas Fitters certification from Alabama Plumbers & Gas Fitters Examining Board.
  • Alabama Heating & Air Conditioning Contractors Certification.
  • Experience in the installation of plumbing, gas, and HVAC systems.

COMPENSATION

Application for this position will be considered for the following Merit System employing agencies:
  • Jefferson County $56,347 - $87,401

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
  • Enforces codes and ordinances by showing/explaining codes and ordinances to contractors to ensure compliance and safety.
  • Interprets codes and ordinances for construction professionals and the general public by reviewing pertinent codes and ordinances to clarify information.
  • Conducts gas inspections by checking for gas leaks, ensuring vent lines are properly installed, and calculating BTUs of gas piping system to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Conducts general inspection activities by scheduling inspections, ensuring fees are paid, and verifying building permits have been issued so inspections are completed in a timely manner.
  • Conducts inspections related to life safety, handicap accessibility, and natural disasters by comparing aspects of construction to code requirements to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Conducts mechanical inspections by comparing aspects of construction to code requirements to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Reviews plans by comparing aspects of the plans to code and ordinance requirements to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Conducts plumbing inspections by comparing aspects of construction to code requirements to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines to upgrade procedures and improve work performance.
  • Maintains inspection records by filing, researching, and documenting records, calculating fees and preparing for court cases so records are organized and readily available when needed.
  • Ensures knowledge is current by researching and reviewing codes, ordinances, notices, and permitting so accurate information can be provided to others.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed both within employer-owned facilities such as an office, or in field locations such as external places of business, residence, or construction worksites.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, Work may involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
