SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Water Transmission Supervisor serves as a meter/valve Mechanic I, and II in the Water Transmission Division. Performs work in skilled and complex mechanical installations and repairs; oversees and maintains mechanical equipment for Water transmission system; and occasionally assists other departments with their mechanical needs. The position must be available to work callbacks, evenings, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather. The position is considered weather-essential personnel.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of all types of equipment.
  • Assist Utility Maintenance Mechanics with various maintenance activities.
  • Perform meter reading duties in remote areas.
  • Replace water meters in the Water Transmission and Water Production areas.
  • Performs inspection and repairs on various types of water meter that are used throughout the system. Coordinate with Water Transmission Supervisor on scheduling and making repairs as needed.
  • Coordinate scheduling and perform inspections on pressure point throughout the city. Make repairs to pressure points as needed.
  • Must be proficient in the use of various hand tools and equipment.
  • Assist in grounds and grounds equipment maintenance.
  • This position is required to work overtime and respond to callback by phone as required by workload or emergencies.
  • Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Verify the accuracy of tank levels, pressure gauges, water meters and other types of meters.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Must have a high school diploma, GED, or vocational school qualifications. Must have and maintain a valid Texas Driver's License. Required to have some knowledge of maintenance and operation of the Utility Department. Ability to read water meter accurately. This position is required to have a working phone for afterhours call backs. The ability to work in all types of inclement weather conditions.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Must have the ability work cooperatively in a team setting or individual setting.
  • Ability to read and write English and communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability and experience in the use of basic hand and power tools including lawn care equipment or demonstrate the aptitude necessary to being trained in their use.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and other areas or projects that require the use of respiratory safety equipment such as paper masks, half mask respirators, hoods, full face respirators, positive air supplied masks and self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
  • Ability to drive/operate various types of equipment used in this industry.
  • Knowledge of safety equipment needed to perform job duties.
  • Will be required to pass a confined space training and physical requirement yearly.

STEP-CLASS REQUIREMENTS

A year of "on-the-job" or relative work experience with Water Transmission system maintenance associated work with meters, valves, and transmission mains. Consecutive "good or better" performance-based appraisals will be reviewed by Water Transmission Supervisor, Assistant Water Production Superintendent, and the Department Head.
