Description

As a Directional Drill Operator, you'll play a pivotal role in our underground utility projects, operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment with precision and safety. Your expertise will ensure the successful installation of utilities beneath various terrains, contributing to the infrastructure that supports our communities.

Responsibilities

Lead Safe and Precise Drilling Operations: Execute bore plans using horizontal directional drilling equipment (preferably Ditch Witch) with a high level of accuracy and awareness of underground utilities.
Plan and Prep the Job Site: Coordinate with the crew to ensure potholing, utility mark-outs, bore paths, and equipment staging are completed before the first pull.
Read and Execute from Plans: Interpret construction drawings, locate marks, and utility data to confidently guide the drill through complex or congested environments.
Set Vaults and Complete Tie-Ins: Assist with the full scope of work, including vault setting, box installation, and conduit tie-ins-start to finish.
Maintain and Troubleshoot Equipment: Keep your drill, vac, and mixing system running smoothly-perform daily checks and troubleshoot minor issues to minimize downtime.
Work With and Lead the Crew: Communicate clearly with your locator, laborers, and foreman. Set the tone with focus, urgency, and professionalism on every job.
Keep the Site Clean and Compliant: Maintain a safe, organized, and OSHA-compliant drill area-ensure all work meets company and regulatory standards.
Adapt and Solve Problems On-Site: Anticipate challenges and adjust drilling plans in real time to avoid conflicts or delays without compromising quality.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3-5 years operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment
• Familiarity with Ditch Witch, Vermeer, or similar HDD rigs, vac trailers, and mud systems
• Proven track record of safely drilling around live utilities in high-traffic or congested areas

Licensing & Compliance:
Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - required
• Clean driving record and current DOT medical card
• Deep understanding of 811 protocol, utility locating, and safe excavation laws

Technical Skills:
• Able to read and interpret bore plans, utility maps, and construction drawings
• Skilled in beacon calibration, rod counting, backreaming, and exit/entry pit alignment
• Knowledgeable in mud mixing, tooling, and ground condition adaptation

Leadership & Work Ethic:
• Takes initiative and thrives in a fast-paced, high-accountability environment
• Communicates clearly with crew members and leads by example on the job site
• Committed to doing it right the first time, with no shortcuts or half-measures

Physical Requirements:
• Able to lift 90+ lbs, climb in and out of equipment, and work outdoors in all conditions
• Capable of standing, kneeling, and operating for long stretches without losing focus
