Job Announcement

This position performs complex tasks related to testing, troubleshooting, operating, maintaining, repairing, and installing building emergency and other full generators systems and system components. Troubleshoots and repairs live electrical circuits, working with voltages from 0-600 volts. Inspects, tests, maintains and repairs generator components such as alternators, speed controls, regulators, wiring harnesses safety devices, shutdown devices, 12- and 24-volt battery systems, cooling systems, fuel systems including day tanks, block heaters and other generator components. Diagnoses and repairs emergency generators and ATS switches. Performs preventive maintenance on Cummins, Detroit Diesel, John Deere, Caterpillar, Katolight, and MTU engines. Performs site inspection and maintains a clean and neat work site. Enforces local, state, and national fire and electrical building safety codes and insurance requirements. Performs related duties as required; duties are performed under general supervision. May lead Electronic Equipment Tech I s in the performance of their duties. Develops/maintains a current knowledge of local, state and national codes as well as equipment/technologies associated with commercial building generator systems. This position requires the incumbent to be issued a procurement card and necessitates adherence to all associated policies and procedures governing use of the card. Works under the general direction and supervision of a Chief Building Engineer and/or a Facilities Manager.

Note: Incumbent is considered essential personnel. Flexible working schedule is required as well as overtime, call-back and on-call.
Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school graduation or a G. E. D. issued by a state department of education; plus, completion of an apprentice-level vocational training program in electronics; and two years of experience in the maintenance and repair of the electronic and electromechanical equipment specific to the position.
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Valid Driver's License
  • NFPA Certified Emergency Power Systems Specialist (CEPSS) certification within 12 months of date of appointment

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and pre-employment medical evaluation to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) or EGSA (Electrical Generating System Association) certified in diesel engine repair and maintenance.
  • Valid Sate of Virginia Master Electrician (MELE) License
  • 5+ years of full-time experience in the maintenance and repair of the electronic and electromechanical equipment.
  • 5+ years of experience in the maintenance and repair of generators up to 2000 KW.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance schedules for generators up to 2000 KW
  • Experience with the following equipment: Digital multimeter, Diagnostic laptop, Oscilloscope, Infrared imaging equipment, and/or Load bank testing equipment.
  • Experience with the following controls, switches, and systems: Programmable Logic Controls (PLCs) and Solid State Microprocessor Controls, Motorola Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (MOSCAD) System, Generator Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) switches, Trouble-shooting generator electrical control switches.
  • Experience trouble shooting and repairing ATS both manual and automatic.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift up to 75lbs. For short periods of time. Carry up to 60lbs. Frequently work near moving parts. Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet to enter tight spaces. Must be able to climb and descend ladders up to 50 feet and work in physically fatiguing positions for long periods of time. Ability to ascend and descend stairs, ramps, and the like for single and multistory (up to 12 stories) buildings in the Department's portfolio. Must be able to wear and use respirator and OSHA required PPE. Pushing/pulling involving use of hands/arms, feet/legs, and/or feet only done with one side of the body or both sides. Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand(s); Reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Stand; walk; climb, balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. Work in various weather conditions (heat, rain, snow, high humidity, etc.). All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
