This Position reports to:
Research Team Manager - Power Electronic Systems

Your role and responsibilities

In this role, you will have the opportunity to gain vocational experience through a temporary work placement (4 months). Each day, you will acquire knowledge by performing tasks as directed. You will also showcase your expertise by supporting ABB's operations and enhancing personal education/employment opportunities.

ABB is a leader in medium-voltage drives technology. The purpose of the internship is to evaluate tailored modulation and control strategies for ABB's existing drives. In particular, this includes evaluating the state-of-the-art that is currently used by ABB, and identifying where advanced modulation and control strategies can bring tangible performance improvement in existing hardware.

The work model for the role is: onsite

This role is contributing to the Corporate Research Center, Industrial Solutions department in the Power Electronics System group in Baden-Dättwil, Switzerland.

You will be mainly accountable for:
  • Deriving a tailored, optimized modulation method for an existing ABB product.
  • Deriving a model predictive control method that completes the modulation method.
  • Comparison with the current-state-of-the-art used at ABB.
  • Writing high-quality documentation for the proposed methods.


You will join a small but knowledgeable team, where you will be able to thrive.

Qualifications for the role
  • Currently pursuing a degree in electrical engineering (M.Sc. degree); official enrollment essential.
  • Possess knowledge of programming skills (preferably MATLAB)
  • You have experience in model predictive control and optimization, as well as knowledge about modulation methods used in power electronics
  • You are self-organized, with the ability to work independently. Consulting and, importantly, challenging your supervisor are encouraged.
  • You are at ease communicating in English
  • You hold a current valid VISA/work permit for Switzerland or a confirmation for a mandatory internship from your university
