Job Description

We have a great opportunity for a dynamic and motivated Assistant Hydrogeologist / Hydrogeologist specializing in contaminated land and brownfield development and/ engineering hydrogeology or to join our Sustainable Land and Resource Management Practice in our London, Epsom, Cambridge offices.

The successful candidate will be an important part of an innovative and technically excellent team helping deliver projects to a number of the largest UK-based and international infrastructure projects including nuclear new-build. AtkinsRéalis land condition specialists use the full range of their skills, working on land contamination, hydrogeology and brownfield redevelopment projects as well as providing innovative solutions to engineering challenges. The work involves local and national projects and frameworks being delivered by AtkinsRéalis across a range of exciting markets, including the development of Cities, Transportation (major road and rail sectors) Water and Energy Infrastructure. We work on projects in London and the South East, the UK and around the world. This post will offer a challenging and rewarding opportunity to apply knowledge, experience and problem-solving skills whilst providing good opportunities for career development. As a member of our friendly and supportive team you will provide hydrogeology support to a range of projects, working with our experienced staff, to deliver excellence to our clients. You will work closely with a wide range of other professionals to deliver holistic solutions to environmental and engineering problems and to support on new opportunities.

Role and Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical input and delivery of contaminated land and hydrogeological focused projects, including site investigation design and supervision, interpretation, development of robust conceptual site models, controlled waters risk assessments, numerical modelling and design reports.
  • Production and checking of complex groundwater models relating to groundwater flow, contamination transport, engineering hydrogeology and civil engineering challenges.
  • Preparation of relevant Environmental Impact Assessment chapters for a wide range of projects.
  • Preparation of proposals and input into bids for multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects.
  • Preparation of H&S Plans for site investigations and managing health and safety.
  • Supervision of contractors.
  • Management of own work including supporting senior management to ensure projects are delivered on-time, on budget and to quality and client expectations.
  • Developing own competence and maintain CPD necessary to fulfil the responsibilities of the role, with support from the business on own training and development needs.

Requirements:
  • Degree qualified in a relevant engineering or science subject (e.g. geology, geotechnics, hydrogeology, chemistry, environmental science). Masters or PhD qualified in contaminant hydrogeology / engineering hydrogeology or related subject preferred.
  • Working towards Chartered Membership of relevant professional body.
  • Relevant post-graduate experience (ideally within a consultancy environment), with a track record in delivering work on-time, on budget and to quality and client expectations.
  • Demonstratable understanding of land contamination/brownfield land/engineering hydrogeology issues (dependant on specialism and interests) including understanding of relevant codes of practice and industry standards.
  • Willingness to travel and undertake site-based work across the UK.

Desirable Criteria (but not essential):
  • Experience in qualitative and quantitative controlled waters and human health risk assessment (ideally with experience in common analytical modelling packages such as P20, ConSim, CLEA).
  • Experience in numerical groundwater modelling including MODFLOW, FEFLOW as well as 2-D packages such as SEEP/W.
  • Experience in working with geospatial data (GIS) using software such as QGIS and/or ArcGIS.
  • Ideally you will have experience managing data on large projects, especially GIS data and AGS data.
  • Experience and knowledge of MMPs and the DoWCoP.
  • Experience and knowledge of EIAs, waste management, due diligence and permitting.
  • Experience in site-based work including supervision of trial pitting, drilling and undertaking gas/vapour/leachate/groundwater and surface water monitoring/sampling.
