Position Description

Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation's largest municipally owned utilities in terms of the number of customers served. Over the years we have worked very hard to keep Seattle's electricity affordable, reliable, and environmentally sound. Today, City Light is a recognized national leader in energy efficiency and environmental stewardship.

Seattle City Light is hiring an Electrical Power Systems Engineer in its Standards Engineering Unit. Seattle City Light standards are important because they define the utility's best practices. Compliance with these standards is mandatory for all City Light employees, contractors, and suppliers. In this position, you will research, develop, review, approve, and assist with production, publication, and training of design, material, and construction standards, and work practices.

The City Light Standards unit offers a supportive and encouraging environment in which to learn and grow. The process of creating each standard depends more on the enjoyment of systematic learning and analysis than possessing a collection of facts. At the end of the process, the engineer will likely know more about the subject than virtually anyone else in the company, resulting in a very satisfying experience for self-motivated individuals who enjoy constantly learning new material and sharing their newfound knowledge with colleagues. This position reports to the Supervisor of Standards Engineering.

Work Practices provide step-by-step instructions on how to perform a task.
  • Interview field personnel, engineers, manufacturer's representatives and sales engineers, senior standards personnel, and others in the field and the office. National industry standards, national, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations will be studied and applied.
