OBJECTIVES:
Water Services: Under general supervision, the Utility Services Worker position provides support for the maintenance and repair of water distribution, and wastewater collections.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Water and Wastewater Services: This is a non-supervisory position. Maintenance Operator I duties include the performance of manual labor tasks in various departments of the City. The work generally includes the use of hand tools and power tools such as tampers, jackhammers, trimmers, lawnmowers, and heavy equipment training, etc. Other types of work include loading and unloading materials, equipment, tree trimmings, brush, grass clippings, and other debris; performing light maintenance and construction duties; working varying hours and days to accommodate required overtime and/or on-call schedule; and performing any other related duties as assigned or required. Must Comply with all safety standards of the City.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
A Maintenance Operator I must be able to lift and carry up to 100 pounds and to pull, push, or drag up to 150 pounds. A Maintenance Operator I is required to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time in the performance of duties. Occasionally a Maintenance Operator I is required to run, climb, crawl, stoop, twist, balance, or otherwise extend or contort the body in the performance of duties. A Maintenance Operator I must use eyes, ears, nose, arms, hands, fingers, legs, and feet to perform assigned duties and responsibilities. He or she must be able to work in confined spaces, drive vehicles or equipment, perform repetitive motions, perform work involving the entire body. Duties of the Maintenance Operator I include exposure to heights; loud noise & vibrations; mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards; fumes and odors; dust; mites; and toxic waste hazards. The job of Maintenance Operator I is performed both indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, temperature swings, and inclement weather. The work environment requires that the employee exercise caution at all times and adhere to safety standards to avoid the risk of personal injury. The employee frequently is required to work under time pressures to meet deadlines, to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, and to work closely with others as part of a team. The employee is required to be "on-call" on weekends and after hours to respond to emergencies.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND TRAINING:
Water and Wastewater Services: A Maintenance Operator I must have the ability to follow oral instructions, to learn to use power or hand operated tools and to operate tools and other equipment safely, to perform strenuous work outdoors, and to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with other employees, to understand oral and written instructions, and to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and good customer relations with the general public. A Maintenance Operator I must be productive in the absence of constant supervision and must be detail-oriented for accuracy. Must be able to use and understand the City's work order system.
Knowledge of:
Methods, practices, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance of water systems and roadways; and safe operation of the equipment used.
Skill/Ability to: Operate equipment used in utility and street construction and maintenance; service and make minor repairs on equipment; apply safety standards to prevent hazards; understand and follow instructions; tolerate outside working conditions, including exposure to adverse weather conditions; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.
